Kids hit the ice dor Shoot 2 Score hockey camp
Dan Schwab
Last week, youngsters in Seaforth
and the surrounding area beat the
summer heat by spending most
of their time in the coolest place
around.
The Seaforth arena was abuzz with
activity as 90 youngsters learned
skating techniques and puck -han-
dling skills during the fourth annual
Shoot 2 Score hockey training camp,
which ran from Aug. 17-21.
Registration was up from last year
and the boys and girls, ages five to
15, received a full -schedule of activi-
ties from 8:30 a.m. till 5 p.m. every
day.
They did spend some time outdoors
working on fitness training. The
players also received off -ice instruc-
tion on some of the fundamentals of
the game — specifically team build-
ing, says Dan Wildfong, a Seaforth
native who managed the camp on
the ice.
"We really orated the team
building aspect into it, which a lot of
camps don't do," Wildfong said. "So
-when they go to their teams, they
know how to work well with each
other."
Wildfong says he kept report cards
for all the players to determine how
much their skills have developed on
the ice at the end of the week.
"We've seen big progression," he
says. "I've . seen a huge difference
from when they first started until
now. The more you get on the ice, the
more you're going to improve. Even
if they only got five or 10 per cent of
what we told them, it's only going to
help." ~4
Wildfong was helped out on the
ice by a. number of hockey veter-
ans, including goalie Ken Carroll of
the Central Hockey League's Boss-
ier -Shreveport Mudbugs and Ryan
O'Reilly, a recent draft pick of the
NHL's Colorado Avalanche.
Figure skating coach Kathy McL1-
wain . also taught the youngsters
some power skating tips.

Wildfong says the older group of
players were taught some advance
techniques such as angling, body
checking and
defensive zone
strategies, while
the younger kids
learned the basics
of skating, shoot-
ing and passing.
"I talked to a
lot of parents and
they said their
kids were cranky
at night and re-
ally tired," Wild-
fong said. "They
are long days for
them and we kept
them going. They
were never really
standing still."
Wildfong, who
is head coach of
the CHL's Texas
Brahma says
there was a wait-`
ing list for players to sign up this
summer and suggests players sign
up early next year for the camp.
