Car show to be held to support Cancer Society
One of Michael Cooper's indelible
memories is the time he and his dad
Carl spent 14 hours together in a ga-
rage ripping out a car engine and put-
ting it back together again.
Michael, now 31, was 11 or 12 then.
Less than a de-
cade later, at age
19, he lost his dad
to stomach cancer
and then lost his
mom Theresa in
2005 to pancreatic
cancer.
In honour of
his parents and
various other rel-
atives who have
died from cancer,
Michael is plan-
ning a car and
bike show at Li-
ons Park on Sept.
5 to raise money
for the Canadian
Cancer Society. •

but we put it back together
and the car started up. It'
was really neat," remem-
bers Michael.
He says Carl Cooper, who
worked as head of mainte-
nance at the Genesco shoe
factory in Seaforth for 26
years, was a jack of all
trades who always worked
on his own cars.
Michael says his mom
loved cars too, a neigh-
bour's old blue Mustang in
particular.
His family used to go to
the car show at the Zurich
Bean Festival, another
memory that prompted
the car show fundraiser.
"I was sitting at work wondering
what I could do. Fm a quiet guy and
I usually just keep to myself but I
thought a car show would be easy," he
says.
Because he's working on restoring
a 1995 BMW 450, Michael says he
hopes to show it at the car show Sept.
5 and is hoping friends at work at the
Durisol plant in Mitchell and other car
lovers come out to raise money for can-
cer research.
"I've been handing out flyers to ev-
eryone I see with a nice car and when
they find out it's to raise money for
cancer, they're interested," he says:'
Michael Cooper
Michael is charging an entry fee of
$5 to anyone with any vehicle - car,
truck, motorcycle, snowmobile or even
bicycle - they want to show off and do-
nating the amount to cancer research.
"I want to have some music playing
and people can bring their cars and
we can talk about our loved ones," he
says.
A barbecue will also be held at the
car show to add to the fundraising ef-
fort and Michael says he hopes to make
the event an annual one if enough peo-
ple are interested.
"This year, we'll just see how it goes
but it would be nice to make it into a
big festival," he says.

The great room's gas fireplace will make this
room especially comfortable during the cooler
months, and a covered deck — reached via slid-
ing doors from the dining room — will provide the
ideal location for the barbecue.
The kitchen is separated from the dining room
and great room by a work island with a raised
eating bar. A Targe pantry will provide always -
welcome storage, and the U-shaped counter
configuration will save steps for the cook.
Natural light will flood into all three rooms
through the large windows that overlook the
back garden.
The laundry room, adjacent to a closet for
family gear, has access to the double garage,
which contains room for a workshop.
