Teen, 13, stays calm during `boring' ordeal stuck in elevator
•

reassured him it would be all right.
We had a couple staff working that
night, so one stayed upstairs to mon-
itor the situation."
Another staff member phoned Otis
Elevator Co. from Stratford, which
performs regular inspections on the
elevator.
They said due to the storm, it
would take at least an hour to send
someone out to open the elevator.
Dodington told Angus to hang in
there while a few phone calls were
made for help.
"They told me they were going to
call an electrician and town hall
to see if they could get a generator
working," Angus says.
"Although Angus was fine, I was
concerned that if he did get anxious,
we should have a back-up plan,"
Dodington says. "So I called the local
fire department and they came right
away."
The two firefighters thought if they
could get the power running again
using a generator, they'd be able to
open the elevator door and get Angus
out from inside.

As other plans of action were con-
sidered, Angus waited patiently in
the small, dark box. He had no books
to read or electronic games to play
with.
"Iust walked around: But it's a
small space and there isn't much
room to walk around so then I just
sat down," Angus says. "I was really
bored."
By this time, one of his friends ar-
ranged to have Angus's older sister
Kelseycome to the library to be with
her brther. Their parents were not
home at the time.
The elevator serviceman finally
arrived to rescue him after an hour
and a half.
"It felt more like two -hours," Angus
says.
The licensed serviceman from Otis
Elevator Co. slid a tool into a peep-
hole near the top of the elevator door
and it opened instantly.
Angus, very relieved, walked out.
"He was a trooper," says Huron
East Fire Chief . Marty Bedard, who
was •at the scene. "He was calm
throughout the whole thing."
"He had a •good sense of humour
about it," adds Dodington.
For enduring the ordeal . with such
patience, the elevator serviceman
gave Angus $5.
"He told me to go and get something
to eat," Angus says. "So I bought
some junk food."•
While Angus says he has been vis-
iting the library often this summer
to read fantasy novels and use the
computers, he tends to misplace his
library card.
So, staff at the Seaforth branch
offered to supply him with a brand
new card.
. However, he says next time he vis-
its the second floor, he'll take a dif-
ferent way up there. •
"I'm thinking of taking , the stairs
from now on," he says.
Before leaving on Thursday, the
serviceman from Otis Elevator Co.
also showed the firefighters a differ-
ent method of opening the elevator
in case the power goes out again.
The power was partially restored
to the library at 7:50 p.m.
•The elevator was still out of order
on Friday, along with some of the
computers.
A repair crew from Festival Hydro
. worked to restore full power to the
library. on Friday, while the Huron
County Library's I.T. department
worked to bring the computers back
online.
Despite Thursday's storm causing:
a widespread power outage, Huron
East Public Works Manager Barry
Milts says no road crews were needed
to be dispatched to repair any dam-
age.
The power was restored to the rest
of the town between 7-8 p.m.
