Riding high

Perfect weather graced Walton last
week, keeping the track dry and spir-
its high among the 1,000 riders and
25,000 fans who converged last week
for thel8th annual Transcan Grand
National Championships, Aug. 12-
16.
A number of local riders hit the
track, going up against some of the
top racers in their age category across
North America.
Mitchell Godkin of Walton took
fourth place in . the 80: ,race. Lucas
Godkin finished 42nd in the event.
Mitchell also finished llthin the
super mini race.
Scott Vande Borne, of Egmondville,
took fifth place in the MX3 GP Inter-
mediate race.
"Scott only recently recovered from
a collarbone injury and he had a bril-
liant ride," says event manager Chris

Seaforth's Tyler Listman finished
in 19th place in the same event,
while Vande Borne -finished 16th in
the MX2 125 Intermediate race.
Nathan Bles . of Varna took first
place in the MX1 250 Junior race
and fifth in the MX2 125 Junior
race. Josh Shea from Seaforth fin-
ished 40th in the event.
In the Youth 14-24 age group,
Matt Shannon of Seaforth finished
35th.
Seaforth's Trevor Keys finished in
25th place in the age 12-16 race and
42nd place in the MX3 Junior race.
Caden Lee finished 28th in the 50
Pee Wee event.
James Bmmrich of Walton took
23rd place in the over 25 race.

St. Columban U-18
team wins North
Huron Championship

The U-18 boys' team added another
highlight to St. Columban's long and
rich soccer history on Aug. 16, after
winning the North Huron League
championship in a nail -biter against
Wingham #2.
Tied 242 at the end of regulation time,
the two teams went into a shootout.
Shortly before, St. Columban's reli-
able goalkeeper, Ian Murray, injured
his leg in a collision, forcing him off the
field for the rest of the match. David
Bolton took up the position between
the goal posts for the exciting final few
plays of the game and the length of the
shootout, which St. Columban easily
won, 4-1.
Kaleb Arts and Leen den Hertog
scored during regulation time and Arts,
Randy Zwep, Brad Van Bakel and Bol-
ton scored during the shootout.
"It was a hard fought game," says
coach Carl Bolton. "In the last two
games, the guys finally came together
as a team and dug deep."
In the semi-final match on Aug. 15,
St. Columban defeated Clinton 1-0.
The team boasted a regular season
record of eight wins, four losses and one
tie before entering the playoffs:
