Residents succeed in walking as far as the Rockies
after taking 4.5 million steps since January
Queensway residents made it to
the Rockies in 4,550,001 steps!
At the end of. January, Queen-
sway Retirement Home residents
were challenged to walk to the
Rockies.
Residents who were interested
in participating received an emp-
ty calendar to track their steps.
At the end of each month, resi-
dents would submit their steps
which were then converted to ki-
lometres.
The journey was tracked on a
Canadian map.
Although at times it seemed like
they were taking the scenic route,
they had fun along the way.
Morning in Motion 'instructor,
•Mandi DeBlock
and Retirement
Home Director
Julie Grimminck had fun ways
of getting the residents to do ex-
tra marching at the end of the
exercise class to also track group
counting.
Many of the classes had a lot
of laughs when residents had win
lose or draw, relay races with
a can of peanuts, quizzes and
marching to favourite music.
Ross Trewartha biked a mile a
day during this project. Beth Knox
and Esther Wright were dedicat-
ed individuals who were prompt
at submitting their steps.
On Wednesday, Aug. 5, during
exercise class, each
participant needed
to : take 27 steps
each, for the residents to reach
the Rockies. They counted down
when they reached 10 and lots
of cheering and smiles were hap-
pening when they finally made it
to the Rockies.
Each resident received a cer-
tificate and were treated to fruit
smoothies out of the blender and
fresh oatmeal raisin cookies:
A toast was made by Julie Grim-
minck for the residents' dedica-
tion and making a healthy choice.
to participate.

When the residents were halfway
there, one of the residents asked
how they were getting back to
Hensall, Ont. Once they made it
to the Rockies, another resident
stated she had done more steps
then she needed, so she was
headed back.
