The mural is the collaborative cre- ation of several young local artists who recently took part in the visual arts portion of a project designed to promote youth involvement in the arts. It features a patchwork of 14 can- vas panels featuring various images that represent the participants' ex- periences of being young people in Huron County. The Engaging Huron's Youth in Arts and Culture project received funding through the ministry of cul- ture, Huron Business Development Corporation, the Huron County li- brary and the Ontario Arts Council, which allowed the organizers to hire local professional artists to mentor the young people involved, says co- ordinator Melina Hussey, "The goal for the whole project -there are three series, art music and film -is we're hoping to create a youth arts council so that those who are interested can form a council to meet once a month and continue to do programs like this," explains Hussey. This is welcome news to partici- pants like 13 -year-old Blyth resident Holly Howson, who says she was thrilled to be involved with the proj- ect and would jump at the chance to continue to work with the profes- sional artist who mentored her dur- ing the workshop. "I've drawn with pastels and stuff and pencil crayons the odd time, but we don't really paint that often in school. I think it was cool because they taught me a couple of new ways how I could paint and I got to use that in the painting. I liked mix- ing the colours of the past, finding the new shades. I'm hoping that as I keep painting I'll learn more and more techniques and get better and better." Howson says her expression of growing up in Huron County was to paint what makes her happiest here. "My painting is kind of like my hap- py place because I always feel calm by nature, and I just thought that I could show the different colours of allthe stones and the grass." Goderich-based artists Natalie Hussey and Linda Wiebe were the two artists brought in to mentor participants as they worked on their paintings. Natalie describes the ex- perience as inspiring. "What I love about it was that ev- eryone has their own style and it was just nice because they were at a point where they had developed what they wanted. They already saw what they wanted in their heads. It was nice to work with kids of differ- ent age groups. Usually I work with adults or younger children. They were very self-sufficient but when they needed you they were very open and willing. It was nice be- cause they would talk back and forth," she says. Seaforth resi- dent and recent Concordia Uni- versity graduate, Monica Eckert is another painter whose work is featured as part of the mural. She says that to her, the best part of the project was simply the fact that it exist- ed in her commu- nity. "It was just a really neat pro- gram. I was s0 glad I discovered it, because I just See PATCHWORK, Page 20 • WED.
