'Nice and smooth' putt earns Robyn Doig the last
available spot on the provincial golf team
From Page 10
Robyn, however, sunk her putt to win
the last spot on the provincial team.
"I was nervous but I knew I could
make the putt. I was trying tothink
positive because I knew I'd make
that shot before so I just thought,
'Nice and smooth' like I always do,"
she says.
"It's been my goal for two years
to get on the Ontario team when I
started, doing better during the last
couple of years in tournaments," she

Robyn, along with her mom Linda,
got on an airplane for the first time
in her life and flew to New Bruns-
wick on Sunday to play against 150
junior girls from across Canada.
Paul was expecting that as the first
alternate to the Canadian Junior
Boys' championships, he would like-
ly get a call to fill in for one of the 150
competitors from across the country.
who couldn't make it to Kitchener.
"I was the 31st out of the top 30
who qualified so it someone pulls
out, I'll be the first one in. And, I still
have four more years in it so I'm very
happy," he says.
While boys ages 14 to 18 compete to
qualify for the nationals, Paul says
very few 14 and 15 -year-olds usually
make it - only five juveniles (ages 14
and 15) made it this year.
Paul also won the Midwestern Op-
timist golf tournament in St._ Marys
this year, earning a spot in the World
Optimist golf tournament where 100
countries compete in West Palm
Beach, Florida next July. Coming
first also won him travel and accom-
modations expenses.
Paul will be competing in the 14
and 15 -year-old category in the four-
day tournament on one of the golf
courses used by the PGA Tour.
"It's a pretty cool experience be-
cause you get to see where you're
rated. in the world," he says.
Because Paul competed in the same
international tournament at age 11,
he says he has the advantage of some
familiarity with the golf course.
But, he adds that with golfers from
around the world competing, there is
a bit of a language barrier between
players. Playing with golfers from
Asia and Puerto Rico last time, Paul
says he had to resort to a primitive
sign language to communicate.
"Maybe I'll just lay low this time
and not have to talk to too many peo-
ple," he laughs.
The golfing siblings say they've
been golfing, as they do most sum-
mers, for at least an hour every day
when they're not playing in tourna-
ments.
Coming from the family that owns
the Seaforth Golf Club, Robyn and
Paul say they've got plenty of en-
couragement from all of their family
members, including their grandpa
Ken Doig, who also golfed on the On-
tario team in national tournaments
many years ago.
"Mom takes us to tournaments all
summer and Dad does most of our
coaching. And, Grandma Doig is al-
ways telling us how good we are and
we love that," says Robyn.
"That's our whole summer basi-
cally. You have to organize your time
well and don't have a lot of time to
relax but I'd rather do that than
mope around all aay," adds Paul.
