New washrooms, wireless Internet attracting visitors

cals planning trips," the says.
Burgess and Bowers say that the
new washrooms are adding quite
a bit of traffic at the tourism booth
while the free access to wireless in-
ternet is another draw for the second
year.
"When there's a sunny day, people
can sit outside and go on the Inter-
net with their Ipod touch or their
laptops," says Burgess.
With a laptop computer at the
tourism booth, the ambassadors are
spending a lot of time helping tour-
ists and locals look up- tourism infor-
mation about Huron East, the region
and across Canada.
Bowers says the booth offers far
more tourism information than it
has previous years, with an expand-
ed number of pamphlets and maps
outside of Ontario.
"We have information about heri-
tage sites and kids' activities that we
didn't have before. And, we can print
brochures off the Internet and that
makes the possibilities endless," says
Bowers. "A lot of people who are not
accustomed to using the Internet for
11
research are com-
ing in so we help
them out."
Burgess says
many tourists are
coming into the
area looking up
their family heri-
tage and going on ,
tours of local cem-
eteries searching
for tombstones.
And, everytime
someone uses the
services of the
tourist booth, both
ambassadors take
the opportunity
to promote Huron
East's attractions
and give advice
about where to go
to shop and eat.
"We are a one-stop thing. You can
get all the information you need
from us," says Burgess.
"And, having the tourist booth
downtown is an opportunity to keep
visitors downtown a little bit longer.
Once they're here, they'll stay for
lunch and check out the shops," she
Laura Bowers and Gwynne Burgess
adds.
Bowers says the addition of brown
signs with a question mark posted
at all four entrances to Seaforth is
doing a good job directing tourists to
the booth downtown.
"People have said they've seen that
sign while driving through. We're
right on Main Street so people are
drawn right where we want them,"
she says.
The tourism ambassadors have
sent 1,000 invitations to visit Huron

ment at the Seaforth Golf Club.
"In the past, there's never been
too much effort made to get people
to leave the motocross grounds and
explore the community," says Bow-
ers, who adds that they will also be
setting up a hospitality tent at the
motocross and golf events with local
tourism information.
"If they're from British Columbia,
they don't know the area and they're
hesitant to just start driving around.
That's where we're there to help
them," she says.
Burgess adds that they've never
heard a negative comment about the
area from tourists.
"They're impressed when they
realize we have so much to offer.
They're always saying they love the
area because it's so beautiful, espe-
cially when they're from a big city. It
makes them want to come back," she
says.
The two add that many local peo-
ple are finding the tourist booth a
friendly place to sit, either to eat
lunch or people -watch.
"It's a clean and friendly spot and
people congregate here," says Bow-
ers.
