More than 100 people packed the Brodhagen Community Hall to hear representatives from Renewable En- ergy Systems Americas (RES) intro- duce their company and their pro- posal for a wind farm between Perth Lines 55 and 44. RES is not the same company be- hind the St. Columban wind projects, but members of Huron East Against Turbines (HEAT) attended the meeting and concerns about health and property values. dominated the night. "Would you support an indepen- dent health study?" asked Allison Cattrysse, a HEAT member. RES land acquisitions specialist Chad Horton encouraged all Logan landowners to gather as much information as possible, includ- ing health studies, before deciding whether to host a wind turbine. RES develop- ment director Nick Muszynski said major studies of long-term wind farms in the UK have shown no in- dication of health impacts. RES and HEAT members also traded differ- ent studies on what happens to property values of land near or hosting wind turbines. HEAT members claimed proper- ty values drop by 28 per cent if the property is located within one kilometre of a turbine, while Horton said some studies show that the opposite. "There are also appraisals that show the opposite per- spective," said Horton. "From the other side, your property has a revenue stream for 25 years." The meeting was a way for RES to gauge public support for the proj- ect. If there is sufficient interest, the company will move forward with wind studies and environmental as- sessments. Because no studies have been com- pleted yet, RES was unable to an- swer some questions. Julie Emond wanted to know how many Logan landowners would need to sign up to make the proposed 40 - 60 turbine farm viable. Muszynski said it would depend on how many signed -up landowners had enough wind on their land, and how close those landowners were to each other. Landowners who sign up but don't receive a turbine are still eligible for revenue sharing or to host other equipment. . The impending Ontario Green Energy Act (Bill 150), which will regulate set back distances for the turbines, also contributed to the un- certainty. Final provincial regulations re- garding setbacks haven't been decid- ed yet, but HEAT cites health con- cerns when turbines are located too close to residences, pools, parks and other places where people gather. Although HEAT members grilled the RES representatives at the meet- ing, Cattrysse said afterwards that the approachability of RES was a positive, even if it didn't change her mind.
