Grant from Seaforth trust goes towards cenotaph. upgrade

A $10,000 grant from the Seaforth
Community Development Trust will
be added to a $10,000 commitment
by the Seaforth Legion to restore
Seaforth's cenotaph and provide
more services to local veterans.
"It's time we recognized these guys.
We want to get the cenotaph up to
European standards," says Joe Stef-
fler, a Legion member and chair of
the Seaforth trust.
Brian Melady, who is helping to
organize a revitalization program
at the Seaforth Legion, says the Le-
gion will be approaching Huron East
council since the cenotaph is on mu-
nicipal property, asking it to part-
ner with the Legion for work on the
cenotaph.
While he hopes the work can begin
before this year's Remembrance Day
ceremonies, Melady says he's still
interested in input from the com-
munity about what sort of improve-
ments people would like to see at the
cenotaph.
Like Stefller, Melady has seen ceno-
taphs m Europe that have impressed
him and he'd like to include some of
the elements used
in Europe like ed-
ucational plaques..
"I noticed in Eu-
rope that the ceno-
taphs are living
educational mon-
uments with more
hands-on interac-
tive pieces. I'd like
to see something
that outlines what
Seaforth's veter-
ans actually con-
tributed during
the war - I know
so little about it,"
he says.
"It seems that
Europe does a bet-
ter job of memori-
alizing their his-
tory than Canada
does arid we can
learn something
from them," says
Melady.
He says that since the cenotaph
is such an important community
structure, situated in a park where
the community gathers all summer
for events like Twi-
