With the fii'st shovel f dirt cleanly
out of the way, the CT Scanner for
Huron County project is officially
under construction.
A number of•local hospital employ-
ees, board members and politicians
were on hand Tuesday, July 14 for
the official sod -turning ceremony at
Alexandra Marine and General Hos-
pital (AMGH) as the $1.7 construc-
tion and renovation project begins
on the diagnostic imaging centre
that will house the CT scanner.
Over the past 30 months, members
of the AMGH Hospital Foundation
Board and an army of , volunteers
across the county raised over $5 mil-
lion to finance the pur-
chase of the scanner
and required renova-
tions to the hospital's
imaging department.
The AMGH Board of
Directors recently an-
nounced that Melloul-
Blamey Construction
Inc. was awarded the
contract to build an ad-
dition and undertake
the required renova-
tions to the hospital's
Diagnostic Imaging
Department to house
the CT Scanner and
new Fluoroscopy and
general X-ray .

As AMGH Board
chair Bonnie LaFon=
taine turned over the
sod on the county project
she called it "an exciting
day" for healthcare in
the county.
"After great delibera-
tion and excitement, we
did it," she said. "This
is a great day and this
equipment will benefit
.all of Huron and be-
yond."
The town of Goderich
kick. started the cam-
paign with a $1 million
commitment over sev-
eral years and Mayor Deb Shewfelt
acknowledged that it was a pleasure
to provide the service to residents
across the county.
"We worked together and we
worked as partners for the good of
the. broader area," he said. "I am
greatly impressed."
While there was considerable de-
bate at the county level over Huron's
financial commitment to the scanner,
Warden Ken Oke said he was proud
that county government played an
integral role in the project adding
that the acquisition of a scanner
positions Huron well to provide ad-
equate healthcare and attract physi-
cians.
