The program, designed to protect the people of Ontario against rabies has been so successful that many ar- eas of southern Ontario are now free of fox and raccoon rabies. In the Huron County area, the min- istry has been active over a number of years with a bait drop program that helps curb rabies in the fox and raccoon populations. Natalie Gorman of the ministry re- ports that cases of fox -strain rabies have dropped dramatically across Ontario to only 41 cases in 2008, down from 1,500 before control mea- sures were implemented in 1989, a 97 per cent drop. "The last confirmed case of raccoon rabies case in the province occurred in September 2005," she said. "Ac- cording to the World Organization for animal Health, with over two years since the last case of the rac- coon strain, Ontario can now confirm that raccoon rabies has been elimi .`Gated from the province." The rabies control program is a joint effort that receives input from a variety of partners across Ontario. Regional health units, municipali- ties, wildlife rehabilitators, licensed trappers, wildlife control agents and aboriginal commu- nities are all key to the continued success of Ontar- io's rabies control program. If a person is exposed to rabies and does not re- ceive emergency treatment, the disease is always fatal. The province uses a number of control mea- sures in the fight against the deadly rabies virus. Ground (ur- ban) baiting , is used in the Ni- agara region, aer- ial baiting is used over the St. Law- rence Islands and large scale baiting is used in south- western Ontario, usually starting in mid-September.
