The Huron Expositor • July 29, 2009 Page 13 • Hilary Long Hundreds of pork producers, their families, suppliers, livestock transpor- tation companies, politicians and oth- ers gathered together at Nuhn Indus- tries in Sebringville last Friday, July 24, to bring attention to the crisis fac- ing the hog industry and the need for action. The day began with a mile long con- voy of tractors, trucks, vans and cars that travelled from Shakespeare to Sebriingville. This pork producers rally was the third such rally organized by the Beginning Farmer group. The Beginning Farmers have been lobbying for assistance for the pig farmers that -have fallen through 'the cracks with previous support pro- grams. While they recognize that the entire pork industry has started to col- lapse, Wayne Bartels, a leader of the Beginning Farmers, said there's an immediate need for government sup- port for mostly younger producers left out of a 2007 Ontario Cattle Hog and Horticulture Payment. The financial crisis started in the pig industry in 2007, due to high dollar, low prices and increased feed costs. Due to the severe crisis in the pig in- dustry, the provincial and federal gov- DOUG CAMPBELL TEXTURED CONCRETE STAMPING • uerthd ad mal Owes • et417 nes sae mi del (matte • Won applicatietu My& keplaces, mss, saps, alms, plan, beau etc. • vane Applicata*: indult drlsewsys, sdewdks, steps, pad dedu, paaw, fi olotiMs, BBQ etc. • rte, soak old concrete 074 CERTIFIED FLEX -CEMENT INSTALLER 519.527.0721 cell 441.3684 RI NI Se49,th diamondconcrete%tcc.on.ca ernments assisted the pork producers with support payments in 2007 and 2008. These payments were supposed to be for all in the industry, said Bar- tels, but because both the provincial and federal programs were based on historical data, the beginning farmer fell through the cracks. Bartels said the final blow came from the H1N1 virus and it's misnaming of the virus, which has devastated the industry to the point that if no imme- diate assistance comes‘on, Canada's pork industry will disappear. And while immediate government support is needed, Bartels said all farm' groups, including. Ontario Pork and the Ontario Federation of Agricul- ture, need to work together to design some sort of supply management pro- gram for long term sustainability for an industry facing import competition, and a combination of input costs and grocery prices that aren't enabling pro- ducers to earn a profit. Gary Long, special assistant to Perth - Wellington MP G • • Schellenberger, was in atten . - at the rally. Long said it is e • . = - • that a farm package will be . ounced this week by federal Agricultural Minister Gerry Ritz. "Something has to give. Something has to change. Some way this indus- try has to get back to profit- ability," he said, but added that a long term answer to the problem would have to come from the hog industry, not the govern- ment. "We defer to you on what the solution will be," he said, adding Schellenberg- er and other rural MP's would work on the industries behalf. No one from Perth -Wellington MPP John Wilkinson's office was in atten- dance at the rally. Oxford MPP Ernie Hardeman, the conservative agricul- ture critic, was in attendance and criti- cized the McGuinty government for inaction. We can't wait six months for Agriculture Minister Lorna Dom- browsky to decide what needs to be done. Something needs to be done now," he said. Farm groups, including the Perth County Federation of Ontario and The Christian Farmers Federation of On- tario have pledged their support for finding a solution. "We want to get back to farming," said Bartels. For more information about the Be- ginning Farmer group visit www be- armer.ca.
