E.D. Smith sets workplace record for no injuries
Seaforth's largest employer has set
a safety record it set out to achieve
last year.
A large banner now hangs outside
the E.D. Smith building on Main
Street 'proudly proclaiming "Con-
gratulations to all employees: one
year anniversary, no lost time!"
The plant, which employs more
than 200 workers, hasn't had a sin-
gle work-related injury since mid -
2008.
E.D. Smith set out to achieve the
goal early last year and plant man-
ager Paul Smith credits the factory's
success to the dedication of its em-
ployees.
"Essentially,
it came down to
our employees,"
he says. "They're
very interested
in making his
go as far as it
can. We'll con-
tinue to set goals
and keep asking
for .employees'
feedback about
what we can ; do
better."
Smith says
after E.D. Smith
became a mem-
ber of Bay Val-
ley Foods., the
companygained

needed to make

such as installing better lighting
and identifying potential hazards
and fixing them.
The plant also has monthly safety
meetings and information is posted
throughout E.D. Smith to influence
employee awareness about health
and safety issues.
There is also a formal hazard re-
porting system for employees to
write down any potential safety is-
sues they may identify.
The plant has also been a member
of the Industrial Accident Preven-
tion Association for the past three
years.
In addition, when the E.D. Smith
plant. in Cambridge closed June 30,
the Seaforth plant received $3 mil-
lion in equipment from the plant,
which Smith describes as "faster,
newer processing eq•ent."
"The safety and well-being of our
employees is important to us," he
says.

RENOVATION IDEAL HOME FOR GROWING
AND HOME FAMILY
SPECIALISTS
This three-bedroom home would be ideal for a
growing family, with an unfinished basement
that could either offer room for expansion, or
might accommodate a mortgage -helper or in-
law suite, where local bylaws allow.
Sidelights around the front door, as well as a
window set into the door, will ensure plenty of
natural Tight in the ground -level foyer, where
french doors open to a good-sized den. This
room, ideally located for a home office, would
also make a great yoga studio or cosy spot for
crafts and reading.
From the foyer, a U-shaped flight of stairs
leads to the spacious open-plan family area on
the main level. At the front of the great room, a
vaulted ceiling and Targe bay window enhance
the room's generous proportions.
The dining area has space for a buffet, and a
sliding glass door opens to an oversized sun
deck at the front, where both family and
guests will enjoy outdoor living during the sum-
mer months.
