Upgraded Legion will be ready for 8Oth\anniversary
From Page 1
the Legion is only there for veterans,
says Melady.
"If we can rent this hall more, it will
give us more funds to spend in the
community and on the veterans," he
says.
The Legion's main hall is rented out
close to 10 times a month for commu-
nity meetings, weddings and funeral
luncheons.
While the building has had no in-
sulation and panelling and concrete
block since it was built, it's been in-
sulated and drywalled with new ceil-
ing tiles, a new sound system and a
brandnew hardwood floor.
To save costs for the hardwood floor,
Melady says he approached a new 'lo-
cal company Gaylord Forest Products
and asked them to partner with the
Legion to build the floor.
"They gave us a $12,000 discount,
which was just under half the cost,"
he says.
The kitchen, which was upgraded a
few years ago, also got a new exhaust
system.
The main hall was also brightened
up with the installation of three new
windows, positioned where display
cases used to be.
"There were never any windows in
here but we decided we needed some
daylight and fresh air in here," says
Melady.
During the construction period,
which started June 1 and should be
completed in a few weeks,, plenty of
members contributed their time with
close to 1,200 volunteer hours.
"We needed the work of skilled
tradespeople but we also needed some
hard grunt work and that's where the
members came in," says Melady.
Still to be completed are the hard-
wood floors along with the trim as
well as collecting updated artwork
such as recent photos of Queen Eliza-
beth II and Prince Phillip.
Melady says an open house will be
held during the Legion's 80th anni-
versary celebrations Aug.14-16.
The 80th anniversary will include
two dances on the Friday night - one
rr IMPORTANT NOTICE
4/ r I n To all Central Huron Property Owners
The Municipality of Central Huron has a new Draft Zoning By-law. This
document brings the three former zoning by-laws (Town of Clinton,
Township of Goderich and Township of Hullett) into one document for
the Municipality of Central Huron. The new by-law has been updated to
be consistent with the Central Huron Official Plan and also provincial poli-
cies and current mapping. As a result of this update the zoning on many
properties has changed, and this may affect the use of your property.

We encourage all property owners to view the draft by-law
and attend an Open House,

sic and the other inside
for seniors in the new-
ly -renovated hall.
On Saturday, the
open house and a chick-
en barbecue and picnic
lunch will be offered
from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
And, on Sunday;
there will be a drum-
head service held at the
cenotaph to honour the
veterans, followed by a
meal for veterans and.
their families.
In the fall, Melady
says he's hoping that
the Seaforth Legion
will have received a
Trillium grant that will
allow further renova-
tions on the rest of the
building, including a
new .heating and cool-
ing system as well as
more insulation.
"We ran a few unsuc-
cessful grant proposals
but we applied again
through Trillium so all
the money spent so far
has come from the Le-
gion. Because we didn't
get the grant money, we
had to steal from Peter
to pay Paul," he says,
adding that another
part of the revitalizaton plan
offer more programming for seniors,
veterans and youth in the communi-
ty.
The Legion did receive a recent
$10,000 grant from the Seaforth
Community Development Trust to
put towards upgrading the Seaforth
cenotaph and programming for veter-
ans.
"We want to put on more socials
for the veterans, something like the
Twilight Tunes with live music shows
once a month," he says.
As well, Melady says he'd like to
Susan Hundertmark photo
Seaforth Legion president Gwen Harbum and finance
committee member Brian Melady get ready for a new
hardwood floor in the main hall at the Legion building.
The new floor is the final installation of a $80,000 reno-
vation, which Included new drywall, paint, windows and
ceiling, to the hall.
was
to
see the Legion used more by stu-
dents learning about local veterans
and their role in the First and Second
World Wars.
"We have a great historical museum
and there are lots of DVDs and learn-
ing materials from Veternan's Af-
fairs that students could watch here,
surrounded by all our memorabilia
around them," he says.
"The Legion is open doors for the
whole community. Anyone who wants
to respect the past and respect veter-
ans has a place here," says Melady.
