Summer camping season brings increa
concern about spread of emerald
Dan Schwab
Now that camping season has
arrived, the Canadian Food In-
spection Agency and the Ontario
Ministry of Natural Resources are
warning campers they may face
fines worth hundreds of dollars if
they are caught transporting fire-
wood infested with emerald ash
borer.
The insidious pest has already
ravaged wooded areas throughout
Southwestern Ontario and it's been
spotted in about a dozen locations
in Huron County, particularly in
Bayfield.
The beetles only fly about one or
two kilometers during a lifetime,
but so far the infestation has been
spread primarily through wood
transported by humans.
The CFIA is currently inspect-
ing local high-risk areas such as
campgrounds, sawmills and wood
packaging facilities ' to help slow
the speed of infestation.
"If this situation is like other in-
festations, it will continue to move,"
says Steve Bowers, stewardship.
co-ordinator with the MNR. "But
we don't want to increase the rate
of the spread. Rather than going
across the county in two or three
years, maybe we can make it 10
years."
All the affected areas are current-
ly regulated by the CFIA and no
ash trees, wood chips, pallets, logs
or firewood of any tree species may
be allowed to be transported out of
the areas without permission.
Fines from $400 up to $4,000 will
be handed down to anyone violat-
ing the regulation.
The CFIA is experimenting with
different types of traps and lures
to quell the spread of the emerald
ash borer, including using phero-
mones as a sex attractant for adult
beetles.
Traps ; consist of a plastic wrap
around the trees covered with a
sticky goop that immobilizes the
beetle when it comes in contact
with it.
An ash tree's rate of mortality is
four to seven years if affected by

the emerald ash borer.
The adult insect lays eggs in the
tree and larvae bore under the bark,
eventually severing the cambium,
a cylindrical layer of cells that pro-
duces new tissue responsible for
the growth of the tree by transport -
ing moisture and nutrients from
the soil to the leaves, which sends
food down to the roots.
If the cambium is severed, the
tree willdie.
ash borer
If someone finds an affected tree
on their property, Brian Hamilton
of the CFIA is asking people to con-
tact the agency at 1-866-463-6017.
