The. 57 -acre property on 45170 Perth Line 55 has two vacant turkey barns which will receive one truckload of waste per day until the barns, measuring 15,000 and 12,000 square feet, are filled to capacity from Ontario Greenways Inc: The waste will be removed from the barns and applied to land in Perth County as fertilizer during the spring, summer and fall months. Tuckersmith Coun. Larry McGrath, said that while he wasn't comfortable at first with the idea of some- one bringing waste into Huron East, he was re- assured by the fact that the waste is being kept inside the two buildings and that the owner is a farmer who vouched that the barns are se- cure. Seaforth Coun. Bob Fisher asked why the company would ship waste to Huron East all the way from Guelph. "Is there no other place in between?" he said. Steve Gloor, manager of Ontario Greenways, said the waste is cur- rently being shipped along the 401 to landfill and compost facilities near Chatham. Fisher also wanted to know how the operation is monitored. "Who's monitoring the deliveries to ensure they are what they say they are or do you have to go on good faith?" he asked. Gloor said the Minis- try of the Environment monitors the facility and "can show at any time." Grey Coun. Alvin McLellan said safe storage "concerns me a great deal." A number of neigh- bours, including West Perth Mayor John Van Bakel, attended the council meeting to ex- press concerns about the content of the waste, whether it will get into the bodies of water that are located on either side of the >)arns and if it will leach into the groundwater through the sandy soil on the property. "We're not concerned about the application but we are concerned about the disposal, which is all supposed to go into Perth County. A couple of years ago, we had material out of Bet- ter Beef that presented a problem in both our counties. - this is dif- ferent material but we want some assurances we're not getting our- selves into a big prob- lem with smell," said Van Bakel, adding he is also concerned that the water supply be pro- tected. Gloor said the waste was composed solely of organic materials that are the byproduct of slaughtering animals, such as fat, oil and grease. He said the site was chosen after both the MOE and the Ministry of Agriculture toured it and said they were not concerned about the sandy soil because the barns have concrete floors where the waste will be kept. He added that while there are curtains on the barns, they will never be used except when the waste is removed. Gloor said the odour will be controlled also by a misting system us- ing liquid lime. "And, the certificate is not issued for life - if concerns about the odour are justified and it's something we can't deal with, the Ministry has to right to take it away," he said. Deputy -Mayor Ber- nie MacLellan pointed out that if the opera- tion meets MOE regula- tions, Huron East can't overrule the province. Seaforth Coun. Joe Steffler asked how On- tario Greenways is get- ting along with the Min- istry of Transportation. Gloor said the com- pany has no issues with spillage.
