Sea Lions prepare for another competitive season
-Dan Schwab
The Seaforth Sea Lions Swim
Club-. is looking : to have another
successful year in the pool as the
team gears up for three competi-
tions .this summer.
On Saturday, the team will _ par-
ticipate in : its first swim meet of
the season, which will be held in
Mitchell. Qn, . July. 25,
the team will be hosting a swan
meet in Seaforth at Lions _ Pool.
The event will have the team's 30
swimmers competing in a number
of races, from the front and back
crawls to the breaststroke, butter-
fly and individual medley.
The team will also hold a fund-
raiser barbecue during the event,
to raisemoney for towels and oth-
er equipment for the swim team,.
whose members range in age from
six to 16.
Coaches Andrea Murray, Matt
Fisher and Ashley Marion are lead-
ing the team once again this year,
in , what they hope will be another
successful season.
"We finished ih first place over-
all two years ago and we did well
last year, so we're going to try to
keep going strong," says Marion,
22, who's helped coach the team for
the past five years.
"We lost a few older kids from
last year's team -and there are only
a fgw new kids on the team," she
says. "But when you live in a small
town, you get along with other kids
and you can see them cheering
each other on."
Races for swimmers ages eight
and under will consist of complet-
ing one full length of the pool, while
those on the team ages nine to 14
will race two laps. -The open boys'
division, which consists of swim-
ming over age 14, will swim four
lengths of, the pool during their
races.
Last year, the Sea Lions finished
in first place in the first three swim
meets of the summer, but finished
in second overall at the final meet.
Marion says she considers the
key to the team's success to be the
fact that they practice so often.
"Other swim teams don't practice
three timesa week," she says.
Anyone ages six to 16 interested
in trying out for the swim team can
visit the Lions Pool on Mondays,
Wednesdays and every other Fri-
day of the month from 4-5 p.m.
