As well, he said a 1989 B.M.Ross
and Associates Limited report about
structural upgrades to the roof
should be investigated further.
He told council that the munici-
pality's heritage committee walked
around the building a few weeks
ago land detailed various concerns,
espiecially about the poor condition
of the verandah and the brickwork.
"The heritage committee was con-
cerned about he appearance of town
hall. The last major work was done
in 1981," he said.
Knight pointed out that the chim-
ney is in poor shape and might need
to be taken down.
"It doesn't make sense to rebrick it
when it's not being used," he said.
He said bricks are coming loose
and missing in several locations
and that slate is loose and shifting
in places on the roof.
"I've noticed slate in the driveway
on a couple of occasions," said Brus-
sels Coun. David Blaney.
Knight said the tower "is looking
pretty rough" with missing wood-
work but is "basically in pretty good
shape."
He added that the tower needs to
be scraped and painted and that pi-
geon droppings need to be removed.
Third floor windows also need to be
repainted and re -
caulked.
The eaves -
trough has been
pulled off on the
southwest side
and Knight said
there is "a real
concern" with the

town hall where the brick is pulling
away from the building.
He said the porch railing is getting
"punky in spots" and predicted that
the spindles could be pushed out.
"There is certainly some mainte-
nance work that needs to be done,"
he said.
Deputy -Mayor Bernie MacLellan
asked how much heritage will affect
their decisions, recommending that
a metal roof will last a lot longer
than repairs to a slate roof.
"You could put a metal roof on
it and it would still be there in 50
years. Slate is very expensive," he
said.
Seili reminded him that the town
hall does have a heritage designa-
tion at the front of the building.
"We may be stuck with our own
bureaucracy," he said.
While Knight's report said the Hu-
ron East budget still has $80,000 in
the restructuring fund that could be
used for town hall repairs, Tucker -
smith Coun. Larry McGrath said he
doubted that amount would cover
the costs.
"Eighty thousand dollars won't
come close to scratching the surface.
I'd like to know more about the fi-
nancials," he said.
Seaforth Coun. Bob Fisher said
he thought the repairs needed to be
done "ASAP"
MacLellan said he thought the
roof should be done first but that
brickwork repairs needed further
investigation.
"We've got to get up there and find
out how bad it actually is," added
- McGrath.
