seeking aid for
beef and pork
industries

Central Huron's reeve is
casting a line for some much-
needed farm aid.
Bert Dykstra made a plea to
fellow county councillors July
15, to lobby the provincial_ and
federal levels of government
to prop up the ailing beef and
pork industries.
Noting a combination of
dwindling demand, a fluctu-
ating dollar and increasingly
stringentimport regulations
from Canada's largest trading
partner to the south are pum-
melling agriculture, Dykstra
suggested it is time for the se-
nior levels of government step
in to help.
Dykstra's motion was sup-
ported by a number of those
at the table, several of whom
are farmers.
Coun. Bill Dowson (Bluewa-
ter), a pork producer, said
beef and pork producers are
in need •of attention since
they don't have the powerful
lobbying groups and supply -
management systems in place
that the chicken and dairy
producers enjoy.
"Now is the time to help
them," he said.

CASA says
wind farms not
likely to cause
negative
environmental
effects
Susan Hundertmark
4111111=1111111.
An environmental screening re-
port by CASA Engineering and Con-
struction on two wind farm projects
planned for the St. Columban area
says the projects are "not likely to
cause significant net negative envi-
ronmental effects."
The five wind turbines in each
project, with an aggregate capacity
no greater than 10 megawatts, are
expected to take up 3.46 kilometres
squared on agricultural land, creat-
ing a footprint of approximately sev-
en kilometres of land "which is less
than 0.7 per cent of the total land
optioned for the project," says the re-
port.
The environmental screening proj-
ect is currently available to the public
at both Seaforth's town hall and the
Seaforth Public Library until July
23. Comments and questions about
the environmental screening report
must be received by CASA and the
Ministry of the Environment by July
23 at 4:30 p.m.
"We have posted the notice of com-
pletion and sent notices to all the
people who contacted us. We will try
to address any concerns if stakehold-
ers are not satisfied with the report,"
says Jose Menendez, of CASA.
Menendez says that while comple-
thAn of the environmental screen-
ing report doesn't mean the projects
have been approved, the Ministry of
the Environment will begin looking
at the report after July 23 and will
have 45 days to comment.
"The intent all along has been to
comply with all applicable require-
ments," he says.
Menendez says he's not certain
yet whether or not the St. Colum -
ban projects will be affected by Hu-
ron East's interim control bylaw
preventing construction for a year's
time while the municipality studies
