There was a big rally of members
of Holy Name Society here on Sun-
day afternoon. Members of the
Society were present from St. Peter's
MeGillivrary, Zurich and St. Joseph,
in all about 350 members marched
from . the hall to the church,
headed by the Dashwood band. Rev,
Father Stanly of Ingersoll addressed
the members on their duty as mem-
bers. of Holy Name Society,
Miss Gertie Dederich, of St. Jos-
eph Hospital Staff, Loudon, is spend-
ing two weeks vacation at her . home
here.
Mr. John Guinan and bride ar-
rived home last week.
Messrs. Richard Patton and James
Carroll are on the sick list. Their
friends wish for them a speedy re-
covery.

Rev. and Mrs: Sinclair returned
this week from Windsor where Mr.
Sinclair has been attending Confer-
ence.
Mr. G. C. Petty has bought the
property on Main St. formerly occu-
pied by G. Dadson and is having the
house attractively remodelled.
A number from Hensall and vicin-
ity took in the "Moonlight" excur-
sion on the Str. Greyhound, at God-
erich on Monday evening last.
Mrs. W. Short of Windsor, is vis-
iting with her sisters in town, Misses
Mary and Emma Johnston.. Mrs.
Short came over on the Str. Grey-
hound.
Next Sunday in the Methodist
church, the Pastor will preachon the

ceiving Divine Blessings"; 7' p.m.—
"The Lost Record."
The C. N. R. Trackmen are great-
ly improving the appearance of the
railroads by setting out several dia-
mond shaped flower beds, which,
when finished will make a decided
improvement.
Quite ae number from Hensall at-
tended the football match in Bruce -
field on Tuesday evening. Bruce -
field was matched against Kenburn
and the result was a win for Bruce -
field by the score of 1-0.
Dr. Larkin of Seaforth preached a
very acceptable sermon in the Car-
mel church on Sunday evening last
which was well attended. Rev. Mc-
Connell took Dr. Larkins pulpit in
Seaforth for the occasion.
On Monday. evening last a number
of friends - of Miss Phillis Young,
bride elect, gathered at the home of
Mr. and Mrs. W. 0. Goodwin and
gave the young lady a kitchen show-
er consisting of many beautiful and
appropriate gifts for use in the kit-
chen... A very pleasant and enter-
taining evening was tendered the
young couple by Mr. and Mrs. Good-
win.
C. Gaminage of Ridgetown. was
high gun, with a score of 148, at the
trap shoot held here on June 4th by
the Hensall Gun Club. Nelson Long,
of Hamilton, was second with 146,
while G. iliarr, Woodstock, and F.
-Kerr, Crediton, were tied for third
with 144. •
C. Gammage had a long run of
33, while Nelson Long was second
with 71 H. Taylor, of Rodney, was
third with 54, and G. Marr, of Wood-
stock, fourth with 53.:

old sod for tillage, when to his great
surprise on sticking the plow into
the ground, struck a bed of gravel
several feet in depth and of a most
excellent ..quality, and it is said the
quantity* is almost unlimited. Since
the discovery over five hundred
loads of choice gravel have been tak-
en out. The residents of that section
are greatly pleased over the discov-
ery as -it is a. innch needed commod-
ity.

Mrs.' W. C. Callfas underwent an
operation for some trouble in her
head. on Wednesday of last week.
Mr. and Mrs. E. R. Siebert, Misses
Ada and and Nora Siebert; Messrs
Frank and Wm. Siebert all of De-
troit, and Mr, Albert Siebert of
Niagara Falls, spent a few days with
their parents, Mr. and Mrs, W. L.
Siebert.
There passed away at his home,
Bronson Line, Hay township, on Fri-
day, May 29th, Mr. Nicholas Kennel,
aged 65 years, 9 months and 6 days.
He has been a sufferer from asthma
for a number of years. Deceased
was well and favprably known in
these parts, was born at Agatha,
Waterloo County, and has been a
resident of Hay Township forsome
thirty years. He is survived beside
his sorrowing widow by 10 children
8 daughters and two sons, also one
sister. The funeral took place to
the Omish cemetery, Bronson Line.

Mr. Arnold Taylor and wife and
child returned to Detroit after visit-
ing the former's father, lTr. R. Tay-
lor.
A number from here attended the
Masonic picnic at Springbank, from
Granton on Wednesday.
Mr. and Mrs, C. Gorvett, of Gran-
ton, visited recently with Mr. and
Mrs. W. Batten.
Mr. and Mrs. E. Hern and family
visited with D. Stephens of St. Marys
on Sunday.
A barn belonging to Dr. Copeland
was burned in St. Marys about 9,30
in the evening. Six horses were
burned, also some delivery rigs.
' Mr. Arthur Gunning, of Kirkton,
is very low at present.
Mrs. 0. Cann, of Thames Road, is
at present very ill.
BIDDULPH
Marion, the nine year old daugh-
ter of Mr. and Mrs. Wni. Dickens,
underwent a painful operation on
Wednesday of last week and a second
on Saturday last for the removal of
a growth on her face, thought to
be the result of an infected tooth.
The little girl has suffered consider-
able pain but is now doing as well
as can be expected.
The cement bridge near the farm
of Mr. freeman Dobbs ,on the 4th
concession was completed ou Satur-
day night. The contractor made
an excellent job. It will be a while
yet before the bridge will be opened
for traffic:
"Freddie Lee," the old favorate
horse owned by Mr. Henry W. Hod-
gins, passed in his checks on thurs-
day of last week. This gond old
piece of horse flesh has a history and
few of the equine race has a better
record. He was at one time a con-
testant on the race tracks, and dur-
ing his older years was an excellent
driver, being faithful and gentle.

Mrs. Lineham of Detroit is vis-
iting at the home of her sister, Mrs,

School convention of the Evangeli-
cal church are holding their annual
gathering at MoKiliop Tp., on June
Pith and 18th.
Mr, Herbert Kalbfleisch, who is
attending the Waterloo Seminary,
is spending the vacation at his home
ou the 16th concession.
The Ladies' Aid, of James St.
church held their meeting Thursday
afternoon. Gratifying results were
heard from' the different committees.
The membership. contest which has
been in progress for a short time, re-
sulted with over fifty new .members
being added to the roll. It was de-
cided to hold a strawberry festival,
July 4th. .
Mrs, Henry Motz returned home
from London on Sunday after spend-
ing a week with, friends there. She
was accoinpanied by Mr. and Mrs. W.
Heatherley and Mr. and Mrs. Alfred
Newman.
Mr. and Mrs. John Lawson, spent
the week -end with Mr, and Mrs.
John Bedford.
Mr. Richard Hill and family ac-
companied by Mrs. V. J. Meade and
and Mrs. W. F. Sando visited with
Mr. anti Mrs. Albert Hooper in Clin-
ton on Sunday afternoon.
Mr.and Mrs. Chas. Zwicker motor-
ed to New Hamburg on Sunday re-
turning home Tuesday morning.
The village Trustees have cleclar
ed Thursday, June 19th as Civic hol-
iday, there being a joint Sunday
School picnic of the Evangelical
church and Methodist chureb on that
date.
Mr, I. Brown, a former boy of the
village, and Mr. Johnston, a former
Canadian bank of Commerce mana-
ger, now of Amhers'tburg, visited
with Mr. and Mrs. H. K. Eilber on
Sunday evening and Monday.
Miss Trellis Hodgins is visiting
her mother for a few days.
Mr. Henry Eilber is able to be up
to the office again after being con-
fined to his bed for a week.

The school picnic will be held at
Grand Bend on Saturday, June 14th.
Bean seeding has been completed
in this section.
Mr. Thos. Barnham, who has been
ill all winter is now showing signs
of improvement.
Mrs. Isiah Tetreau, who has been
,in St. Joseph's Hospital, London, un-
dergoing an operation, was . able to
return home last Sunday and is now
on a fair way to recovery.
(Miss Calling, who has been unable
to teach at the school for several
months, owing to ill health, is again
on duty. Miss Sharpe had charge
during' Miss Calling's absence.
The Ladies' Aid o! the Methodist
church is holding a htrawberry fest-
ival on. June 19th.

here attending the funeral of the
late David Hutchinson.

Mrs. (Rev.) Connor, wife of the
rector of. Saintsbury and Kirkton
Anglican churches, underwent a sur-
gical operation in Toronto Hospital
last week for the removal of a large
.tumor. The operation was a success
and the patient is doing as well as
can be expected.
A SURPRISE—Mr. Harvey Hod-
gins, of the 4th concession was most
pleasantly surprised one day last
week, which promises to enhanch his
bank account to a great extent. He

visiting with his sister Mrs! H. Price
in town this week.

on Sunday. -
A number of the young people
motored to Goderich on Monday
evening and took in the Greyhound
boat ride which was very enjoyable.
Thames Road
The Sunday School anniversary of
the Thames Road Presbyterian
church will be held on Sunday, June
223a.d. Rev. Mr. Gardiner, of Ailsa
Craig, will preach at both morning
and evening services, 11 a.m. and 7
p.m. Music in the morning by the
Thames Road choir and in the even-
ing by Cavell Presbyterian choir of
Exeter. On Monday June 23rd. a
Strawberr Festival will be held on
the Manse grounds.. Supper served
from 6 to 8. In the afternoon sports
and races and a baseball game be-
tween Thames Road and the Bound
ary will commence at 6 o'clock. Af-
ter supper a program will be given
by Messrs; Roy Goulding, E. Chris-
tie. and Wm. Mills; Are. G. Pass-
more, entertainer and local singing.

Mr. and Mrs. A. Proctor visited
with friends in Belgrave over Sun-
day.
Mr. and Mrs. Fred Fairhall, of
Windsor, spent the week -end with
the former's parents, Mr. and Mrs.
Fairhall.
Mr. John Essery has been in
Windsor this week attending Con-
ference.
Mrs. Jas. Neil visited in Detroit
with her daughter, Mrs. E. Beavers,
last week. ATrs. Beavers is return-
ing with her for a short visit.
A kitchen shower was given in
honor of Miss Edna Bowden, by the
Mission Circle members and other
t friends at the home of Miss Verda
Boyce, on Monday evening.
Grand Bend.
Death of Mrs. - Statton.—Phare
died here on May 28th, l\tary, belov-
ed wife of Joseph Oliver, at the age
of 53 years. Deceased had been i11
only a few days of pneumonia. Al-
though not being well for a number
Of years, being troubled with a weak
hart, her death came as a shock to
her friends and relatives. Besides
her husband, she is survived by two
slaughters; also five sisters and
three brothers] Her father, John
Statton died here on April 30. Her
remains were interred in -the cezne-
teryhere on Friday, the funeral be-
ing largely attended. The bereaved
have the sympathy of the commun-
ity.
Mrs. B. Bossenberry and children
are visiting at Forest,
Mrs. Richard Canning, who has
been visiting at London, returned to
her hone here last Week.
Mrs. Frank Allister has. sold her
property here to Mr. John Taylor.
Mr. Elgin Neeb is all smiles, the
stork having brought a son to his
home on June 3rd.
