OPP Inspector Dan Grant, and Central Huron Fire Chief Steve Cooke were on hand at the school's year end assembly to present Bryce Lebold, Sky Hendrickson, Bethany Fisher, Rebecca Johnston, Dylan Cronin, and Dylan Williston with fire chief's citations, letters of con- gratulations and certificates of ap- preciation from MP Ben Lobb and MPP Carol Mitchell. The students, who were return- ing to school from lunch when they noticed smoke coming from a house on Ontario street on May 8, acted quickly to ensure that no one was in the house. "We could smell smoke and heard the fire alarm [in the house] and no- ticed the smoke coming out of the window and then we went up and knocked on the door," said Williston. "We kept knocking just to make sure no one was in there. This one guy was sleeping in the back of the house, and he came out with two dogs. There was a police officer cruis- • ing by so we waved him down and called the fire department," he said. Williston- said he was surprised by how much recognition the group has gotten, but Cooke pointed out the CHSS students Bryce Lebold, Sky Hendrickson, Dylan Williston, Rebecca Johnston, Dylan Cronin, and Bethany Fisher re- ceived fire chief's citations from Clinton n Fire Chief Steve Cooke and Goderich OPP inspector Dan Grant for their swift reaction to a house fire in Clinton. importance of acknowledging their actions, particularly in light of their age. "These students demonstrated sound judgment and a commitment to their community safety. Too often teenagers are bashed for the mis- takes they make, and all too seldom are they recognized properly for the good things they do. I am proud to be able to recognize them for their re- sponsible actions." Inspector Grant echoed this senti- ment. "All of the things that you do con- tribute to the betterment of the com- munity and we also recognize that the fire and the OPP, we can't do the job by ourselves. We rely on all of you to contribute to the success and safety of the community," he said. CHSS principal Laurie Langstaff also expressed pride in the students, and noted that receiving the certifi- cates definitely put a smile on their faces. "I know that the students who were the recipients are absolutely thrilled to have been recognized in this man- ner. It meant a lot to them. We are very proud of them for taking the initiative and making sure every- one was safe and reporting this," she said. "It's something just to see them afterward, the impact that receiv- ing that award and recognition has had upon them is phenomenal," said Langstaff. Williston however, maintains the group just acted in the same way that anyone would, without hesita- tion. "It was pretty much, a house is on fire, we should do something," he ex- plained.
