• On the stage in the gym of Seaforth
Public School, Shawn Allen held an
oversized cheque worth $1,037 and
choked back tears as he addressed
hundreds of students.
A group of youngsters at the school
known as the Cubs Care group
started raising money in September
for the Ronalee Allen Memorial Or-
phanage Fund.
Her husband Shawn thanked the
group and all the students at the
school for their commitment to the
fund in memory of his wife.
"I'm very proud of this community
and each of you," Shawn told them.
"This money will go toward help-
ing children who have so much less
than us in other parts of the world.
This means so much to us."
The Cubs Care group raised the
money through a number of fund-
raisers, from a week-long frozen.
yogurt sale to a school -wide penny
drive and other initiatives.
Their donation brings the total
funds raised for the orphanage up
to approximately $10,000.
Land in Kitale, Kenya, has also
been purchased and Shawn told the
students he hopes construction on

the facility will begin this fall.
"As the money comes in, we'll build
as we go," Shawn said.
He says the orphanage will cost
about $25,000 and have accommo-
dations for 23 children ages five to
15, as well as for several caretak-
ers.
Shawn says the reason he and
Ronalee's children Breezey, Olivia,
Makaylie and Josiah continue their
commitment to building the orphan-
age is because the children are des-
perately in need.
"They have nothing," Shawn says.
"They are living on mud floors with
no running water."
Shawn also says their efforts are
to keep alive the passion Ronalee
had for helping less fortunate chil-
dren when she was alive.
"My wife's whole life was dedicat-
ed to children," he says.
Ronalee was killed in a car crash
on Highway 4 in Kippen on May 30,
2008, at the age of 42.
Before she died, Ronalee had tak-
en in more than 150 children, from
foster kids to others who needed
temporary shelter, over a span of 18
years.
