Books on manufacturing
easier to find with new
Huron County collection
Sarah McDonald
Things just got a whole lot sim-
pler for local residents looking for
manufacturing specific reading ma-
terial thanks to a new partnership
between the Huron County Library
and Huron Manufacturing Associa-
tion.
Representatives from the HMA
and the library gathered at the Clin-
ton Public Library recently to launch
the project, which clearly identifies
HMA recommended reads.
Many of the books focus on the con-
cept of "Lean manufacturing" which
John Feeney, HMA workforce devel-
opment co -coordinator explained is a
concept that "helps companies elimi-
nate wasteful steps and practices."
The idea to provide reading ma-
terial on this subject to members
came out of a series of educational
seminars hosted by the HMA, said
Feeney.
"The seminars were mostly hands-
on simulation games that presented

the Lean Manufacturing methods.
Afterwards, we received feedback
that people would like to have had
some reading materialon the con-
cepts and methods as well."
The books range from introductory
to advanced topics, and are written
in a variety of formats, from step by
step guides to textbooks, to comic
book format.
Feeney hopes this variety will help
the HMA -approved material reach
a broader audience. "There's some-
thing for everyone," he said.
Feeney also points out that al-
though the Lean concepts are usual-
ly applied to larger businesses, there
is no reason that someone working to
start up a smaller business couldn't
benefit from some of the selections
as well.
"These books can be really helpful
no matter what type of worker you
are," he explained.
Some of the books have been do-
nated by the HMA, while others were
already in the library's collection. So
far, the HMA has identified about 30
books, and Feeney pointed out there
will likely be more to come.
The HMA is also working on put-
ting together reviews of each of the
titles as well in order to help readers
determine which books might be best
suited to them and
their business.
These reviews will
be made available
in the HMA news-
letters.
All of the
books are eas-
ily identifiable as
part of the collec-
tion by the HMA
sticker located on
the cover. They
can also be located
by visiting the li-
brary catalogue
online and looking
under the "Have
You Read?" section
of the website.
The books can
be reserved at the
library or online
using a Huron
County Library
username and pin
number, which
can be obtained by
visiting your local
branch, and can
be picked up at
whichever Huron
County library
branch is most
convenient.
