This week, Kathy Devereaux is
determined to add another gold
medal to her collection.
She'll be lacing up her roller
blades with Team Canada and
facing off against almost a dozen
countries during the Federation of
International Roller Sports World
Inline Hockey Championships in
Varese, Italy from June 27 -July 4.
Devereaux, who was born in Sea -
forth and now lives in the Greater
Toronto Area, will be playing in
her sixth international competi-
tion and says she'll be expected to
lead her team by example on the
rink.
"One of things that I think has
given us confidence going into the
tournament is the fact that a num-
ber of the national team members
residing in the GTA" have been
playing together in a men's league
for the spring season," Devereaux
says. "Hopefully this opportunity
to get a feel for each other's play-
ing styles and strengths will give
us an edge."
The inline hockey championships
are played in a four -on -four for-
mat, on an Olympic size surface. "The two will make for

nament due to a funding shortage
in 2007.
Last 'year in Germany, Canada
lost to the Czechs in the gold med-
al game 3-2 in overtime.
This time around, Team Canada
head coach Kendra Magnus-So-
botka says the team is determined
to reclaim the gold, - adding that
as a coach she'll be looking to De-
vereaux to take on a leadership
role.
"Kathy comes with so much en-
ergy and drive, there isn't a shift
that she doesn't give 100 per cent,"
Magnus-Sobotka says. "She is def-
initely 'a leader and her enthusi-
asm is contagious."
The coach says the team's
strengths are its speed, finesse
and knowledge of the inline game.
"These ladies come with a lot of
hockey experience, both ice and
inline, and being such smart hock-
ey players, they easily adapt their
skills . to the actual inline strate-
gies," she says.
She also says before, the team
competed with 10 skaters and two
goalies and this year the roster
has included two additional skat-
ers.
says.
But she adds that over the years,
competition from other countries
has only gotten tougher.
"Historically; Canada has always
been a key contender in the world
championships. On paper, we've
got a strong roster; though we've
got to execute and play hard ev-
ery game in order to bring home
the gold medal," she says. "We can
expect to see closer games and
more hard fought battles. The mo-
mentum for the sport has be.en in-
creasing in Europe and I'd expect
the trend to continue this year."
In Deveraux's first year with
Team Canada in 2003, 10 coun-
tries participated in the tourna-
ment held in the Czech Republic.
Canada failed to win gold that
year but came back in,2004 to beat
the U.S. 5-0 for the gold medal.
The following year, with 10
teams participating, Canada once
again defeated the U.S. 1-0 in the
gold medal game, with Deveraux
scoring the game -winning goal.
After a 2-1 loss to the U.S. for the
championship in 2006, Team Can-
ada faced some financial struggles
and was unable to attend the tour -
