Eight Seaforth seniors win medals in Seniors' Gams
Achterlonie gets gold in golf, Preszcators win solo and triathlon trio ties for first
Susan Hundertmark
Eight Seaforth seniors were medal
winners at this/year's district Senior
Games and three of them will go on
to compete at the Regional Games in
Chatham on Sept. 3.
While winning was the last thing
on her mind, Anne Auchterlonie
came first in golf at the Mitchell golf
course.
"I .was really surprised to win. I
can't even remember what I shot
that . day - I just played golf. I went to
have fun," sh”ays.
A golfer for about 20 years, Anne
says she's only competed hi the Se-
niors' Games for two years.
Because she'd never golfed in
Mitchell before, she and some friends
decided to play the 18 holes the Mon-
day before the Seniors' Games event.
and got soaked during a rainstorm.
"But, it let's us know . where the
holes were so it -helped a little bit,"
she says.
Olave Little came third in the golf
event. Both will be competing at the
Regional Games in September.
Ken and . Velma Preszcator came
first in the Solo competition and "had
a fun day" doing it.
"We've done it for years and years
and were surprised to win," says Vel-
ma.
Velma says this is the first time
she and her husband have . won the
Solo event but have won in the past
in both crokinole and .bid euchre.
"We're big card players and we see
the same people every year," she
says.
Velma says it took her awhile to
learn how to play Solo but not too
many people in " Seaforth play the
game.
"The cards fell our way that day - if
luck's with you, that's how you win.
We had good scores but my husband
did better than I did," she says.
Tying for first in the triathlon event
in St. Marys were a trio of Seaforth
women - Ethel Walker, Joan Perrie
and Elsie Beuermann.
Ethel, who does the walking, Joan,
who does the swimming and Drusil-
la Leitch,'who does the cycling, have
won the triathlon event several
times in the past but because Drusil-
la broke her anti, Elsie stepped in
to do the cycling
for her.
"I knew I
could do it but
there was a long
hill in St. Marys
and that was the
toughest part,"
says Elsie.
Because of a
complicated cy-
,eling route, 'Elsie
and Joan drove
the route before

the event, which helped Elsie under-
stand where she was going.
"I never would have found the last
part of the trail if we hadn't driven
around with a map," says Elsie.
While she cycles around the five -
mile block by her Winthrop -area
home with her grandchildren, Elsie
says she didn't have time to do any
training.
"Plus, there was such miserable
weather this year," she adds.
So, when she had to predict how
long it would take her to cycle the
five kilometres, she decided to take
Drusilla's guess of between 17 and
18 minutes and set a time of 17:37
minutes.
"But, I was a little too fast. If I'd
said 17:07, I would have been right
on," she says.
Ethel, who's been doing the predic-
tion walk for five or six years, says
it wasn't hard to repeat her winning
performances for the three kilometre
walk.
"I keep track of the times each time
and I hope for the best. I don't do any
training - I just do a lot of walking
and I walk at the same pace all the
time," she says.
Joan did her eight lengths of the
Pyramid Centre pool in St. Marys
with the breaststroke and was only
five seconds off of her predicted
time.
Joan also came second in the pre- ,r'
diction swim event, where she de-
cided to challenge herself by swim-
ming the front crawl instead of her
preferred stroke - breaststroke.
"It's harder to count strokes and to
breathe with front crawl. It's always
been a challenge to me," she says.
As well, a torn cartilege in her knee
provided some challenge, creating a
little less strength in one leg.
Still, she was only three seconds off
her predicted time.
Joan adds she's glad she came sec-
ond in the prediction swim event
because a man she's beaten for sev-
eral years ended up beating her this
year.
"He was so excited. ft was worth it
to see his reactipn when he won," she
says.
Joan will be going on to the Region-
al Games for the prediction swim on
Sept. 3.
