Huron Expositor, 2017-06-21, Page 15Wednesday, June 21, 2017 • Huron Expositor 15 Bayfield celebrates renewed Blue Flag status of main beach and marina The Municipality of Bluewater, in partnership Ar with the Bluewater Beach Committee, Pioneer Park, and Ausable Bayfield Conservation, raised its Blue Flag last week, in promotion of cleanliness, water quality, and safety Sheila Pritchard Postmedia Network Two blue flags were raised for another year on June 15 in celebra- tion of Bayfield's renewed Blue Flag status, one for the Main Beach and another for the Bluewater Marina. The Blue Flag designation is a world-renowned eco -certification administered by Environmental Defence in Canada and by the Foundation for Environmental Education internationally for beaches and marinas. When you see a.Blue Flag flying, you know a beach or marina is clean and accessible; has great water quality; meets high safety standards; and is working hard to protect local shorelines and ecosystems. In fact, Bluewater Marina received Blue Flag status in 2009 and was among the first three marinas in North America to do so. The Main Beach narrowly missed attaining the sta- tus that year, but was awarded the flag soon thereafter. This year, the flag for Bayfield's Main Beach was unfolded at Pio- neer Park where Bluewater Mayor Tyler Hessel spoke about the impor- tance of the recognition. "The Blue Flag is a very proud thing for me," declared Hessel, adding talks of the initiative started back in 2007. "I did an educational session with Envi- ronmental Defence, brought back all that information, and we decided to take the next step to move for- ward. It's one of my favourite pro- jects that Bluewater does." The flag unfolding was followed by a rain garden presentation and tour led by Kelly V'adar of the Blue - water Beach Committee and Pio- neer Park Association. Attendees then moved down to the main beach for a ribbon cutting by Brett Tryon of Blue Flag Canada. Fol- lowing that, a storm water sam- pling was done at beach level by I lope Brock and Sandy Scotchmer of the Bluewater Beach Committee. The event was concluded with an inspection of the beach led by Committee members Arlene Parker, h'lari \'eliz, and Erica Clark. Beaches given the Blue Flag acknowledgement must meet pro- vincial standards for water quality and safety standards, including lifeguards or lifesaving equipment. Beaches are required to meet 33 criteria and marinas must meet 25. Bayfield is one of the 27 beaches and eight marinas in Canada that are now flying the Blue Flag. There are 46 countries and more than 4,000 beaches and marinas that have been certified all over the world. Hessel says the multiplicity can use the designation as a marketing tool. Sheila Pritchard Bluewater Deputy Mayor Jim Fergusson and Mayor Tyler Hessel proudly pose with Bayfield's Blue Flag. "[This] acknowledgement in turn ends up being a global advertising scheme for us and it's a great part of our marketing tool for the Bayfield region, as well as it promotes health and well-being, as well as a safe environment for people to swim in. And we do monitor the lake quality itself and keep all our residents and tourists informed of that quality." Hessel says he is honoured to see Bluewater Municipality and Bay- field receive this designation once again this season. "We're a very proud community when it comes to water quality, as well as beach safety, and, of course, protecting our families and youth that come to visit our community itself."
