Postmedia Network
It's going to be a long cou-
ple of months for Chad Rob-
ertson. By day he'll be riding
his bicycle, by night he'll be
sleeping in a tent. Every-
thing he needs to survive
will be strapped to his body
or his bike. Robertson is
donning a helmet and hop-
ping on his bicycle to raise
money for the Canadian
Mental Health Association
in memory of his brother
Shane, who died last
November. At 27 Shane took
his own life after struggling
with addiction and mental
health issues.
The fundraiser, which is
called "Ride for Hope" will
see Robertson, who lives in
Belmont, ride across Can-
ada. The journey will start
on July 2 at Covent Garden
Market in London and fin-
ish around the middle of
September in Victoria, B.C.
The cross-country trip has
been in the works for a long
time.
"Growing up we always
had plans on doing the trip
together. Never really got to
do that so I decided to
maybe try to make some
good come out of (the) situa-
tion," Robertson said.
Robertson's family is fully
supportive of Ride for Hope.
Ile works for the family
business, Raw for Pets in
Aylmer, which is one of his
sponsors.
The first stop will be in
Grand Bend, then onto
Goderich, up to Kincardine.
The fourth stop will be in the
Bruce Peninsula before the
fifth stop in Tobermory. After
that Robertson will take the
ferry across Lake Huron
where family will drive him
to Sault Ste Marie. From
there he will continue his
journey across the Prairies
through to British
Columbia.
Robertson, 26, isn't wor-
ried about how he'll physi-
cally do the 4,300 kilometre
trip, even though he isn't an
avid cyclist. He's worried
about how he'll be mentally
when the road stretches out
long before him, when he's
alone in places he's never
travelled, when he's thinking

"The distance isn't what I
think is going to be the trou-
ble. I think it's going to be
more mental. Just being
alone out there, new
grounds, new territory," Rob-
ertson said.
Right now Robertson isn't
thinking about the chal-
lenges, he's thinking about
his brother and all the sup-
port he's received since he
started.
"Ever since I started this
campaign for the fundraiser,
Ride for Hope, all the love
and support I've been get-
ting from all of my friends,
family and even just com-
plete strangers. They support
what I'm doing. That really,
really pushes me," Robertson
said.
Robertson has received
sponsorship from three local
businesses, but he's still far
from reaching his goal of
$100,000.
