A fairly laidback
competition comes
to Seaforth
Shaun Gregory

Degree CrossFit Seaforth
is excited to have been
recently selected as the
hosting gym in the region
for the Festivus Games -
rather than focusing on
world-class athletes, this
competition has a more
laid-back concept.
New to the fitness world in
2011, the contest has flung
full force to recognize the
intermediates as well as the
novices; the website states
that they make about 95 per
cent of athletes involved in
the sport.
Regardless of whether
you've been involved in
training exercises for six
months or more or are just a
beginner, all are welcome
this October.
In 2016, after tallying up
the numbers, it's believed
that 16,000 people partici-
pated in the event; a large
increase after welcoming
about 70 athletes in the inau-
gural year.
Having previously com-
peted in the Festivus
Games a few years back,
owner of Degree CrossFit
Seaforth, Kaleda Con-
nell knows what this
means to up and corning
competitors who want to
challenge themselves in a
relaxed atmosphere or
conversely just long for a
good time.
"That's what competition
does, any time that you train
towards a specific goal
makes you better -mentally
and physically," Connell said
last Thursday.
Connell has sent out
emails inviting any mem-
bers from various gyms in
the area to compete; train-
ing with unfamiliar faces
is valuable to one's growth
in fitness, she indicated.
It's a way of life for the
young gym entrepreneur,
one that soaks up her time
when she's out of town.
"I'm probably the worst
(holiday person) of all-
time, I stop at random gyms
the whole time," said
Connell.
And that's something she
urges her own members to
attempt, "I want people to
feel comfortable going to
these other gyms, just being
in an environment with
people they don't see
everyday."
There will be two -person
teams of the same sex with
three divisions, this
includes novice, intermedi-
ate, and masters, Con-
nell said this will alleviate
the stress on competing
solo.
Awards will be given to the
top three athletes in each
division for both male and
female classes.
