devise a memorable plan to
commemorate Canada 150
Two Huron East councilmen tell ideas
of planting trees and the initiation of
a potential time capsule project all in
lieu of the nation's confederation

For the time being in Seaforth,
nothing "major" is happening to
commemorate the 150th anniver-
sary of Canada's confederation;
understanding this, two Huron
East councillors have devised a
plan to honour this once in a life-
time occasion.
It's a plan that possibly could be
passed down from generation to
generation and so on.
At a June 6 Huron East council
meeting, one of the two Seaforth
ward reps, Bob Fisher said he and
Tuckersmith Coun. Ray Chartrand
had been bouncing ideas off one
another to fill the void of proceed-
ings promoted by the Canadian
government as Canada 150.
"I wondered about having trees
planted and putting five of them
somewhere (in Seaforth), let's say
Victoria Park," stated Fisher while
adding that he prefers the trees to
be placed in the ground in a "semi"
circle with one tree in the middle to
represent "five communities"
forming into one in commemora-
tion of the municipality's amalga-
mation in 2001.
Chartrand remembered how
monumental the moment was in
the country's centennial year of
1967, "at school we all brought
something," to place in a time
capsule.
If the community and the
municipality are willing to be
involved in the endeavour, Char-
trand said a time capsule would be
a great idea to engage locals.
"It could really be a big thing for
the community to bring stuff and

our kids and grandkids could be,"
Chartrand said to council.
The youngest out of the political
bunch, McKillop Coun. Kevin
Wilbee said instantaneously after
Chartrand spoke in a light-hearted
manner, "I'11 be here."

Knight reminded council of the
time capsule currently hanging
on the third floor of Town Hall, he
said it was created to honour the
amalgamation and is set to open
in 2051.
More talks of the two councillors'
initiatives will be brought back to
council at the next meeting due to
the fact a few staff members were
not in attendance.
