Breaking attendance and potentially donations records for Toss Em Up for Childhood Cancer

In the last decade, the ""foss Em Up
for Childhood Cancer" event has
raised nearly $400,000 and organizers
say judging by the 400 people signed
up for a fun game of holey board; this
year's event is shaping to be the best
yet.
Located on the outskirts of Seaforth
and now in its ninth year, Chad Van
Dyk said last Saturday's ring toss tour-
nament had 200 teams consisting of
two people per squad not including the
100 or so who just came for support.
With back and fourth family func-
tions from Seaforth to Woodstock Ont.,
Van Dyk said this is an event that keeps
growing from the inaugural event when
they launched it for his cousin Nick Van
Dyk who passed away from cancer in
2008.
"In the first year it was too big to not
be able to continue and it's blown up
from there," stated Van Dyk just after
opening ceremonies June 3.
Having almost 100 Van Dyk family
members plays a huge role in the
event's success said 27 -year-old, Van
Dyk.
"I think if we didn't have that big of a
family, it would be much more
difficult."
The competition raises about $15,000 to
$20,000 annually; Van Dyk said he doesn't
usually predict how much money has
been accumulated until the next day,
however with record-breaking attend-
ance, he's predicting S25,000-$28,000.
Although this is a day focused on
having a few drinks and mingling with
friends and family, the primary goal is
to help families battling cancer and Van
Dyk said unfortunately they always
have a person sharing their cancer
story.
"I wish we didn't have anybody up
there to honour, but it's the least we
could do," he said.
Achievement Day for the Grey Township
Pizza Lovers Club comes to Seaforth
Special to the Expositor
The Grey Township Pizza Lovers
4-H recently received a private tour
of Pizza Train's kitchen in Seaforth.
The owners, Ross and Phyllis
Chisholm, showed them how they
made their pizzas. This included the
process of how their pizza dough is
created from scratch, how they grate
the Mozzarella cheese, and how they
operated the most important appli-
ance -the oven. Then they were invited
to make a delicious personal pizza.
While waiting for the pizzas to come
out of the oven, Phyllis had the group
complete a word search competition,
first place was Courtney Gubelmann,
second place was Lerissa Stevenson
and third was Nicole Alexander --the
prizes were candy. President Kyle Ste-
venson then thanked Ross and Phyllis
for making such an "exciting achieve-
ment day" and presented them with a
4-H bag and some IPM Beautification
Bows. The members of the Pizza club
would like to thank the Grey Town-
ship 4-H leaders for the 4-H sweaters
that were giving to the members at the
achievement day. The sweaters and
supplies, like project books and pizza
ingredients for meetings, are made
possible by generous donations from
the community, like the Brussels
Lions and those individuals that
donate Ivomec labels, with special
thanks to McCall Livestock and the
Blake families.
More than 500 people attended the Toss Em Up for Childhood Cancer event. Organizers said it was the largest
turnout to date.
Showing some moves for a good cause.
Sherry Hugill from Goderich joined
the trend of donating hair for cancer
last Saturday.
When seniors need a bit of extra care,
a new world opens up to them at
