CANADA ROAD
SAFETY WEEK
CONTINUES FOR
HURON OPP
(HURON COUNTY, Ont.)
- Huron County Ontario Pro-
vincial Police (OPP) offic-
ers had a busy long week-
end responding to numer-
ous calls for service along
with their proactive efforts
supporting the 2017 Can-
ada Road Safety Week traf-
fic safety campaign.
Canada Road Safety Week
started on May 16th and it
came to a close at midnight
on May 22nd, 2017. This
campaign's focus was on
the "Big Four" causal fac-
tors of motor vehicle col-
lisions, those being -
Impaired Driving, Lack
of Occupant Restraint
Use, Aggressive Driving
and Distracted Driving.
As evidenced by the number of
charges laid over the weekend
there are still too many driv-
ers that are choosing to drive
while impaired and too many
failing to watch their speed. The
message from Huron OPP at
the start of the campaign was
dont become a statistic, unfor-
tunately for some drivers their
risky driving behavior resulted
in charges and in one case
an ATV driver remains in hos-
pital with serious injuries..
Huron OPP officers charged
two drivers with Impaired
Driving, One with Refusal to
Provide a Roadside Sam-
ple, 156 with Speeding, nine
with Seatbelt offences and
five with Distracted Driving.
During the course of the cam-
paign Huron OPP officers inves-
tigated 10 motor vehicle colli-
sions. 50% of those were ani-
mal related, four were minor
property damage collisions
and one involved a serious all -
terrain vehicle (ATV) crash.
The ATV crash occurred on
Saturday, May 20th around
4:30 p.m. A 70 -year-old male
was operating an ATV in a
gravel pit located on Roman
Road in Huron East when
he attempted to descend a
steep hill. He lost control of
his machine and was thrown
off of the ATV. He sustained
serious injuries from the
crash. Police believe alco-
hol was a factor in the crash.
Although Canada Road Safety
Week has ended Huron OPP
officers will continue to con-
duct proactive traffic enforce-
ment on our local road-
ways in an effort to keep our
roads as safe as possible.
NOVICE DRIVER
REFUSES
PROVIDE
TO
BREATH
SAMPLE
(HURON EAST, Ont..) - A novice
driver from London has been
charged with Refuse to Provide
Breath Sample following a traf-
fic stop that took place over the
weekend. Shortly before 4:00
p.m. on Sunday, May 21, 2017
Huron County Ontario Provin-
cial Police (OPP) officers were
conducting Reduce Impaired
Driving Everywhere (RIDE)
checks at a checkpoint located
at the intersection of Walton
Road and McDonald Line.
While at the RIDE program
officers noticed a GMC pickup
truck approaching the RIDE
checkpoint when it abruptly
came to a stop and turned
around. Officers felt this was
suspicious so they followed
after the pickup truck and
stopped it just down the road
from the checkpoint. While
speaking with the driver the
investigating officer detected
the odour of alcohol com-
ing from the driver. A demand
for the roadside screening
test was made and the driver
refused to provide a sample.
As a result, the novice driver,
an18-year-old female from Lon-
don has been charged with
Refuse to Provide Breath Sam-
ple. She was later released from
custody with a court appear-
ance scheduled for July 10,
2017 at the Ontario Court of
Justice - Goderich. Her licence
has been seized for 90 days
and her motor vehicle will be
impounded for the week.
