May 24, 2017 • Huron Expositor 7 Record attendance at Hike for Hospice Walk raised Ar over $20,000 Justine Alkema Postmedia Network The Hike for Hospice is an annual event in Central Huron, but this year was a special one. In past years, proceeds have gone to the Huron Hospice Volunteer Service. However this year, proceeds were shared with the Central Huron Residen- tial Hospice. The walk also served as a kick-off for the fundraising campaign for the hospice, dubbed "Moments Matter': The campaign's total goal is 2 million dollars; the walk raised $20,000. The cam- paign has already received $300,000 total from the walk and other sources. The National Hospice Palliative Care Week was May 7 -13, and the hike saw record attendance this year as people took to the Varna Nature Trails on the after- noon of Sunday, May 7. Around 80 people attended the event, where in past years there may have been 15-20 on a good year, according to Jay McFarlan, Vice Chair of the Site Devel- opment Committee. Along with record attend- ance, the walk this year raised over three times as much as the walk last year. The event also brought a few significant gifts from local families with McIn- tosh Poultry Farms promis- ing $100,000 over five years, and Janet Buchanan and Linda Hatten gifting $5000 in memory of their parents, Mel and Betty Graham. Tony and Jane Davison, who are long-time support- ers of Huron Hospice, donated $4000. Sean McCann of Great Big Sea coming to Bayfield Sober, Survivor and Great Big Singer Kathleen Smith Postmedia Network Widely known as a mem- ber of the internationally renowned band, Great Big Sea, musician Sean McCann is returning to Huron County. McCann performed last year in the Goderich Celtic Festival and will return to Huron County with a con- cert on Sunday, June 4 at the Bayfield Town Hall. Breaking his silence on his past addiction and alcohol abuse, Sean uses the mantra `help yourself' and believes that music can change lives for the better. "I believe that music saved my life," says McCann, on how writing and performing music has helped him deal with his issues of addiction and substance abuse, while showing him how to find strength from the pain. In January 2014, McCann released his first post Great Big Sea album, 'Help Yourself', which encompasses a wide range of emotions; each song contributing to the narra- tive of facing and over- coming demons. Instead of a time of sold - out hockey arenas, McCann now finds the power of music in touring the country as a solo artist in more inti- mate venues where he con- nects with the audience. Using music as therapy, working with people who face physical, mental and addiction challenges, McCann has found that music is a form of therapy. McCann has become a sought after speaker on such topics to help others help themselves find light through the darkness, as he used music to find strength and overcome. For an intimate evening of music, Sean McCann will Photo courtesy of Sean McCann Sean McCann is coming to perform at the Bayfield Town Hall Sunday, June 4 at 7pm. perform at the Bayfield Town Hall in which he "fell in love with and wanted to come back to this area."
