Delay leads to "nice sunny day" for Seaforth Lions Annual Children's Trout Derby

Hands were tied for safety
reasons when making the
abrupt but wise decision to
delay the Seaforth Lions
Annual Children's Trout
Derby a week later on the
calendar and it proved to be
the better choice.
"It (looked) great, it's a
nice sunny day, I guess the
postponement due to our
rain issue has maybe helped
us," stated Paul Stephen,
Seaforth Lions Annual Chil-
dren's Trout Derby commit-
tee chairman.
The previous date, set for
May 6 welcomed an
onslaught of rain, resulting in
high water levels in several of
the streams in Huron County.
Bright and early from 6:45
a.m. until about 11:00 a.m.,
parents accompanied their
aspiring fishing children
May 13 to the stream flowing
through the Lions Park.
Roughly 120 children were
thrilled to catch trout, Stephen
said while mentioning that it's
a common ritual for several
participants to not register
upon arrival, "the last thing on
their mind is a hot dog and a
pop; the hot dog will still be
here, the fish you never know."
Youth 14 and under were
spread out throughout the
Silver Creek waterway all
with the anticipation of
catching the largest trout.
Since the derby is
designed specifically for
trout, the large carp three
local boys caught unfortu-
nately was waived off, but
that didn't stop thein from
horsing around while posing
for a photo to give the fish a
forced smooch.
Following the usual legal
two trout catch limit law for
narrow channels, every com-
petitor fished the waters that
were filled with roughly 200
purchased trout.
Stephen said this year they
had trouble finding the fish
they needed for the derby
locally, thus they ended up
going with Silver Creek
Aquaculture in Erin Ont.
A couple of Lions
members drove a pick up
truck to haul back the ship-
ment of trout, 12-15 fish
were put in each garbage bag
filled with oxygen.
Each fish cost about $3.
"Just like if you Nought
goldfish," said Stephen.
Winners are as followed:
1st place Luke Beuttenmiller with a 32.5 cm fish
2nd place Logan and Carter Young with a 31.8 cm fish
3rd place Peyton Riley with a 31.4 cm fish
Payton Wood, 10, holds a trout he caught at the Seaforth Lions
Annual Children's Trout Derby.
Alt smiles from 12 -year-old, Erick Gulutzen.
Lots of tight grips on fish last
Saturday.
From the left, Ethan Govier, 10, smiles while Joey Clarke, 12, jokes with eight-year-old, Mick Clarke.
The three caught a carp at the Seaforth Lions Annual Children's Trout Derby, however it was not
legitimate for the tournament rules.
A great time for bonding.
