by Huron East for flagpoles

Canada Day is immi-
nent, with less than two
months away from the
150th anniversary, the Sea -
forth Optimist Club have
concocted a plan to sym-
bolize the nation, the
municipality and their own
organization, which has
been part of the commu-
nity for the last 50 years.
At a Huron East council
meeting May 2, Optimist
Club member Bob Cos-
tello approached council
through the delegation
sector; it was then that he
requested the political
assemblage to cover funds
for three new flagpoles.
"Worst thing they can
say is no," stated Costello
in a recent interview relat-
ing to the flagpoles cost-.
ing about $550.
"I suggested that we go
about doing this by going
to the town because the
Optimist Club is actually
on town property, we just
maintain it and look after
it.
Huron East council
approved the funds for
three separate 20 -foot
flagpoles that will house a
Canadian flag, which was
donated by Huron -Bruce
MP Ben Lobb, a Huron
East flag given by council,
and an Optimist flag.
The current flag set-up
is out -dated; Costello said
it takes three to four bod-
ies just to pull the pin out
of the flagpole.
The new poles will be
installed on the corner of
County Rd. 12 and Brant-
ford St., so onlookers can
view when they drive by;
Costello expects them to
be erected before July 1.

The Huron East/ Seaforth
Community "frust has plans
to coat the entire town in red
and white.
In celebration of Canada's
150th birthday, the Trust has
purchased 1,100, 18x 30 -inch
Canadian flags at a cost of
S8,000.
One flag will be given to
each homeowner in
Seaforth.
"It's something they can
put on their window, their
door or hang on their front
porch," stated HESC'T secre-
tary and director Maureen
Agar May 12.
"This is a special year for
Canada and I felt that follow-
ing our mandate to promote
the morale of our citizens, by
giving each household a
Canadian flag would be a
super boost to community
spirit."
Although the project is
directed to Seaforth

To the left, Maureen Agar and Lin Steffler showcase a Canadian flag last week in Seaforth. Both
are part of the Huron East/ Seaforth Community Trust and they are excited to announce that each
home owner from Seaforth are slated to receive a Canadian flag, which will be smaller than the one
shown in the image.
residents, if there are flags
left, Harpurhey and
Egmondville residents are
welcome to purchase those
remaining for $5 apiece.
Those funds will be
donated to the Seaforth and
District Food Bank.
"If we can get every one to
hang them out and it goes
viral, we could be known as
the most patriotic town in
Canada," Agar said with
enthusiasm.
Chair of HESCT, Lin Stef-
fler is asking residents to
take selfies or pictures once
each home receives a flag, so
they can create a collage
with the images.
She said this is a perfect
way to shadow the Trust's
mandate, which is to use
reserve funds to promote the
health, safety, economic
development, and welfare of
the ratepayers of the town of
Seaforth.
Although it has not been
confirmed yet, Steffler said
the Bethel Bible Church
youth group may potentially
be responsible for the deliv-
ery of the flags, which are
slated to be ready by next
week.
