Seaforth Public School students
manifested a harmonious concert
to commemorate Music Monday -
the world's largest single event of
its kind.
This is an annual initiative put
together by the Coalition for Music
Education; it attracts hundreds of
thousands of musicians usually
with the intentions of playing on the
same day and hopefully the exact
same time as well.
Always falling on the first Mon-
day of May at noontime, the par-
ticipants are asked to sing or play
a specific song that has been writ-
ten by Canadian lyricists.
"The idea is that we are united
in voice from coast to coast," said
Seaforth Public School, music
teacher, Heather Dawe while also
mentioning that since there was a
long list of performances by each
grade that they didn't sing the
song titled Sing it Together until
about 1 p.m.
This year the song was based on
the aboriginal culture, which
play, Dawe said the school sang
the melody to the track, "I just
didn't think we would do that
much justice as the professionals
could do it," she said May 3.
Especially since all the grades
1 think it's important because it just gives them
an audience to perform for and that really
drives us as musicians,"
— stated Seaforth Public School, music teacher, Heather Dawe
included plenty of First Nation
drumming and Inuit throat
singing.
Instead of attempting to play
the song with instruments and
such, since the song can be for-
matted for almost any style of
from kindergarten up had an
already busy schedule with per-
forming their own musicals.
-Kindergartens sang the
Stompin' Tom CA -NA -DA A song
with a percussion ensemble.
-The Grade 1 /2 performed as a
choir, singing Land of the Silver
Birch while others played the
djembe and helped with the
xylophone.
-The Grade 3 and 4 classes
played songs on their recorders.
-The Grade 4 and 5's have been
recently learning the ukulele, so
they showcased their newfound
skills on the instrument.
-All the Grade 6, 7 and 8 classes
performed as an instrumental
band with Dawe.
At concert time, the marching
band, drum circle, performance
band and ukulele club left the
crowd in awe.
"I think it's important because it
just gives them an audience to
perform for and that really drives
us as musicians," stated Dawe.
"I really do see a lot of value in
children making music and play-
ing together, it builds relation-
ships like nothing else does."
