New hockey league team wins provincial championship

The Huron Ileat is the
newest hockey league in
town, and a press release by
the league claimed, "to call
(the first season] a simple
success would be an
understatement."
The Huron Heat's website
explains about the league,
"In May 2015, BCH (Bayfield,
Central Huron, Hensall)
Girls Hockey, BBMHA (Blyth
Brussels Minor hockey asso-
ciation) and West Huron
Wave Female Hockey Asso-
ciation came to an agree-
ment that the three organi-
zations would join forces as
a new entity sanctioned by
the OWHA. This new girls
association (debuted] in the
2016-17 season as the Huron
Ileat Female Hockey
association."
The new association put
144 girls on the ice this year.
Some teams in particular
celebrated big accomplish-
ments this inaugural season;
four teams from the league
competed in provincials
from April 7-9 - the Novice
B, Atom B, Peewee BB and
Bantam BB teams.
However while many of
their teams excelled, the
Bantam BB team was partic-
ularly successful; they
earned the title of All Ontario
Champions.
"We came [to the provin-
cial tournament] with gold
on the brain," said coach
Scott Meyer.
In their round robin, they
played Mississauga, Aurora
and Lake of Woods, taking
three wins and a bye to put
them in quarterfinals.
They faced their league
rivals, the Woodstock Wild-
cats, in the quarterfinals.
A 3-0 victory put them in
the semi-finals against the
very strong Timmins
Falcons.
Timmins got on the score-
board early, but the lleat
battled back, tying things up.
With only 42 seconds left to
play in this battle, the Heat
found the back of the net
once again and the crowd
erupted.
They were going for gold.
A strong Ancaster Avalanche
team would square up with
the Huron Heat to determine
who was going to come out
as champions.
The puck dropped and
these teams played three
intense periods, leaving the
game scoreless after regula-
tion, pushing them into
overtime.
The players and their
coaches kept strategizing
and giving it their absolute
best, and two minutes into
overtime, they scored.

BB team had achieved their
goal - the title of Provincial
Champions.
The league wanted to fans, and most of all, each
thank their bench and team and every talented, hard -
staff, supportive families, working player.
