After three years of EmployerOne surveys, the Four County Labour Market Planning Board (FCLMPB) finds that the majority of employers in the region con- tinue to highlight the need for soft skills training to ensure workplace success. Based on annual survey feedback, several commu- nity initiatives have been undertaken to address soft skills training aimed at creat- ing and sustaining a stronger local workforce. Based on survey responses, we know that 461 employers hired at least one employee in 2016, collectively accounting for 5,416 new positions in the region. Over half of these positions were full -tinge speaking to a more stable workforce. Nearly half of surveyed employers reported they had trouble filling at Least one position in 2016. Looking at the overall picture, 25% of these employers had been trying to fill these positions for more than a year. This suggests that many employ- ers are experiencing long- term challenges trying to find employees. "We need to focus on developing a community strategy that addresses employer concerns and have businesses involved in the discussions," said Gemma Mendez -Smith, executive director of the FCLMPB. Results from the annual EmployerOne Survey, which will be shared with local stakeholders, includ- i n g educators, local governments and Employment Ontario Ser- vice Providers, can be viewed at www.planning- board.ca/reports/ employerone-survey- observations/.
