New craft brewery in Bayfield
Justine Alkema
Postmedia Network
1 luron County is building up
an impressive craft brewery
scene. Adding to the mix this
spring are two new breweries in
Bayfield. First, Bayfield Brewing
Co. announced their opening,
and now, River Road Brewing
has announced theirs.
Other craft breweries in the
county include Cowbell Brewing
in Blyth, Stone House Brewing
in Varna, I Ialf I lours on Earth in
Seaforth, Square Brew Inc. in
Goderich and Bad Apple Brew-
ing Company in Zurich.
River Road Brewing is the
brainchild of Dave and Nikki
Andrew who have been brewing
beer as a hobby for almost a
decade. They grow their all own
hops, barley and yeast.
"It's a farm based brewery,"
said Dave Andrew.
For the past number of years,
they have brewed beers for
friends, themselves and family
functions. i'hey experimented
with all kinds of different reci-
pes, and Andrew said he has
been touring breweries for 10
years in the States and in
Scotland.
"I started to see lots of nano -
breweries popping up with
smaller equipment than what I
have at home," said Andrew. So,
he and his wife decided to apply
for a manufacturing license and
make a business out of it. They
are expecting to get that license
in the near future, and at that
point, they can begin selling
their product.
To start, they will focus on
selling to restaurants. They
already have agreements with
several local restaurants in Bay-
field to sell their beer.
For now, both Dave and Nikki
are keeping their full time jobs
and doing this on the side. How-
ever in the future, they hope to
grow into a larger scale opera-
tion. They have a separate build-
ing on their property right now
to brew in, but they hope to
eventually build another struc-
ture to set up a retail space in.
"We're playing with designs
right now," said Andrew.
Down the road, they want to
do beer tastings and tours of
their facilities to show what
grain to glass breweries look like
(the farm itself is called River
Road Brewing and Hops.) As the
name implies, the brewery is on
Bayfield River Road.
Currently, they are serving
four staple beers, and making
other one-off, seasonal recipes.
Their four staple beers are a pils-
ner, porter, west coast pale ale
and a wee heavy.
Andrew said due to his Scot-
tish roots, he enjoys beers of the
Scottish style, so hoppier IPAs
and westcoast pale ales. How-
ever they are looking to provide
a variety of options.
Their website is riverroad-
brewing.com, and they are on
Facebook, Twitter and
Instagram.
