Also hailed as the "Soup Cook -off of the Year," entering the eighth annual gathering, co- founder, Herb McGowan said the year after year growth is "phenomenal" After attending the Stratford Soup Festival, McGowan said Seaforth Coun. Bob Fisher and the late Christine Behnke were sure this type of tasty food competition would flourish. Those predictions were more than precise. The year of their debut, they accumulated $1000 and on April 8 at the Seaforth District Com- munity Centre, they accepted the most donations ever in the event's history -$8500. "It was very well attended, we were backed in a corner by 11:15 a.m., there was wall-to-wall people," stated McGowan the next day by phone while adding that there were 21 soup tables on hand. McGowan said one year they had 24 tables in the competi- tion; however he felt it was too crowded. The event has raised roughly $40,000; McGowan said the local food hank is always appre- ciative of all the money raised. Seaforth Coun. Nathan Mar- shall and Phil Main represented CKNX Classic Rock; they won the People's Choice Award. McKillop Ward Coun. Brenda Dalton's daughter earned the title for best clear soup. EI.N.E. A Restaurant in Grand Bend won the best cream soup. Seaforth and District Food - bank coordinator, Bob McDowell said this large dona- tion from the soup event allows his organization to remain active in helping their 200 monthly users. I le said they receive a delivery from the distribution centre, which covers all of Huron County, but there is still an abundance of foods needed. This money will be put forth for can goods, eggs, vegetables - including their most required asset -potatoes. McDowell said the Souper Saturday and the September Food Drive are the most suc- cessful draws for donations at the Seaforth and District Foodbank.
