Drugs found
from traffic stop
in Seaforth
A traffic stop in Seaforth yes-
terday morning has led to
criminal charges against a
driver and a passenger.
At approximately 10:44 a.m. a
Huron County Ontario Provin-
cial Police (OPP) officer spotted
a Chevrolet pickup truck parked
on Main Street South in Sea -
forth. The officer noted a cracked
windshield on the vehicle as well
as a possible licence plate vali-
dation offence. While observing
the vehicle, the pickup truck went
mobile, soon after the officer ini-
tiated a traffic stop to check on
the condition of the vehicle.
Upon speaking with the driver
police became suspicious of the
driver when the name she pro-
vided was not found in the pro-
vincial driver>s licence data-
base. Further questioning
revealed the female had pro-
vided a false name and was
obstructing the police officer. She
was placed under arrest and
the motor vehicle was subse-
quently searched. The search of
the vehicle revealed the driver
and two passengers were in
possession of an illegal drug.
Police also learned one of the
male passengers was cur-
rently serving a probation sen-
tence and had conditions to
not be in possession of drugs
and to keep the peace and be
of good behavior. After learning
this, the passenger was placed
under arrest for failing to comply
with his conditions of release.

Trusting Citizens
Continue Get
Scammed
(HURON COUNTY, Ont.) - Huron
County Ontario Provincial Police
(OPP) would like to remind
the public to be very cau-
tious of a scam that hit Huron
County this past week.
A 51 -year-old from South
Huron received a call this
week from someone claim-
ing to work for the «Bank». The
scammer directed the victim
to check on her online bank-
ing accounts because they had
received information that her
accounts had been compro-
mised. The victim allowed the
scammer remote access into
her bank accounts and then
he made an electronic trans-
fer of $730 from her account
into an offshore account.
In a similar case, a 73 -year-
old, also from South Huron
received a phone call from
someone claiming to work for
a major Canadian bank. The
scammer stated they were part
of the «fraud department» and
they were notifying the vic-
tim that her bank account had
been compromised. At that
point the victim proceeded to
provide her personal informa-
tion to this phoney bank inves-
tigator. She provided her name,
SIN number, date of birth, credit
card numbers and debit card
numbers to the scammer.
The victim was tricked into believ-
ing the bank had deposited $2100
into her account. She then was
instructed to withdraw $900 from
her account and then use a money
transfer service to wire the money
to the investigator. The victim pro-
ceeded to her bank to make the
withdrawal however an alert cus-
tomer service agent informed
the victim that this was a com-
mon scam. The bank was able to
confirm that the $2100 depos-
ited into her account was actually
the victims own money that had
been simply transferred from her
credit card into her bank account.
The victim accounts were
immediately frozen and all
of her credit cards and debit
cards were cancelled. She was
instructed to report the mat-
ter to the credit bureaus to have
her accounts flagged for suspi-
cious/fraudulent transactions.
Here are some tips to help
protect you from falling vic-
tim to this type of scam.
• Remember that neither the
bank nor a police investiga-
tor will request you to assist
in an undercover investiga-
tion or ask you to withdraw
money from your account. If you
receive a suspicious call like
this, hang up and call police.
• Never give out personal bank
information over the phone
unless you are the one that
called the bank and they ask
questions to verify your identity.
• Never transfer funds electroni-
cally to people you dons per-
sonally know or don>t trust.
• If you do need to withdraw a
large sum of money for a legiti-
mate purpose, request a bank
draft or a money order as this
ensures only the intended recipi-
ent is able to access the money.
Criminals will not accept these
forms of payment because it
creates a paper trail that can
be used by real investiga-
tors to track the fraudsters.
• Check your bank state-
ments frequently and report
any irregularities to your bank
as soon as you notice them.
