United Way encouraging carpooling with website

For the past two years,
getting around has been
easier with the United
Way's ridesharing program
on regionalrideshare.ca. It
has proved to be a popular
tool.
"It's online carpooling,"
said United Way Perth-
Iluron Executive Director
Ryan Erb. "It's an
opportunity for people to
reduce the amount of trips
they might take and for peo-
ple who don't have access to
a vehicle. "Ihe biggest reason
people use it at this time is
to get to an from work."
Ile said it is free to regis-
ter and use the website.
Individuals can sign up, but
companies can also
register.

can use it," said Erb.
"Organizations can sign up,
and they use it as their own
internal bulletin board for
car sharing. Companies can
use it to encourage envi-
ronmental stewardship and
help with employees that
don't have a ride, especially
with the labour shortage."
Once registered, users
identify the location they
would like to travel to, and
the system connects them
to other people going to the
same place.
Erb emphasized that it is
a private, secure conversa-
tion that ensues, and users
do not have to give up their
identity until after arrange-
ments are made if they
choose to go forward with it.
The program began fol-
lowing a report on rural
transportation that pointed
out transportation chal-
lenges people face in the
community.
They pulled together
agencies, organizations
and politicians, and this is
one of the programs they
set up, which is actually an
extension of a program in
the City of London.
The website says areas
served are Huron, Lamb -
ton, Middlesex, Oxford,
and Perth counties, and
London, St. Mary's, St.
Thomas and Stratford.
Ilowever Erb pointed out
that people often car pool
to regions beyond that
including Toronto.
The United Way also
anticipates introducing Car
Share to the area in 2018,
that will be introduced in
Stratford first where the
population makes it more
feasible. Whether of not it
could be introduced in
Huron County hasn't been
determined.
