before launching
$2 million project

The $2 million street recon-
struction project for Vanastra
is only weeks away, but before
the first shovel hits the ground,
the municipality of Huron East
is informing the public of all
the details, so nobody is left in
the dark.
To answer any concerning
questions or to listen to input
from the community about the
project, Huron East staff held
an open house March 28 at the
Vanastra Recreation Centre
with roughly 25 residents
attending.
There may have been more
people at the event, however,
Tuckersmith Coun, Ray Char-
trand said days prior, Public
Works Manager Barry Mills
went out with a group and
canvassed the area.
"They went door-to-door
knocking and handing out
flyers about the meeting and
a lot of people were asking
questions at the door," Char-
trand said March 30. "It's
good to get the public's
feedback and make them
aware of what's going to
happen ahead of time, so
there are no surprises."
It doesn't matter what type
of work you're going to do, if
you're going to disrupt peo-
ple's normal lives, you have to
give them awareness it's the
right thing to do."
Beginning in the middle of
April and expected to be
completed by summer, the
construction will encompass
Winnipeg Road (from Hali-
fax to Toronto Boulevard),
Toronto Boulevard (from
Winnipeg to Regina Road)
and Regina Road (from
Toronto Boulevard to the
cul-de-sac.
This includes roads, sewers
and storm drains, Chartrand
said the roads will be wider
because the ditches are
expected to be removed.
This update to infrastructure
is needed stated Chartrand,
"some of these roads are in
really rough shape."
He said there are cur-
rently roads dating back to
the days when Vanastra was
a home to the Canadian Air
Force.
During the three-hour
meeting, Chartrand said the
primary concerns from resi-
dents were in relation to
Regina Road as the location
is a dead-end street. He
assured those worried that
there would be temporary
parking spots available and
an alley pathway to lead to
their homes.
"They have been revitaliz-
ing that area for quite some
time, this is just another piece
of the puzzle of making it a
stronger infrastructure with
new sewers and roads," said
Chartrand about Vanastra,
which has a population of
about 650 people.
