implementing Agri -Food
Careers Motion
Press release from Huron-
ir Bruce MPP Lisa Thompson
Huron -Bruce MPP Lisa
Thompson generated a flurry
of activity among the Liberals
today during question period
when she inquired of the Pre-
mier why nothing has been
dome for two years to see her
Private Members Motion,
Growing Agri -Food Jobs,
implemented in Ontario
classrooms.
Thompson introduced a Pri-
vate Members Motion, known
as Growing Agri -Food Jobs, in
2015, which called on the gov-
ernment to incorporate a com-
ponent on agri-food career
opportunities in the grades 9
and 10 Careers and Guidance
curriculum. The motion passed
with support from all Parties,
but to date has still not been
acted on.
«The Premier and her Minis-
ters have all recognized that
this is an important initiative
and needs to get done. That
was made clear two years ago,
and again today when they
began discussions among
themselves after my question.
I>m looking forward to working
with the Minister of Education
in order to see it rolled out in
time for the next academic
year. We need to he ensuring
that our young people are
aware, appreciate, and are able
to pursue the opportunities
available to them in the agri-
food sector,» said Thompson.
During her tenure as the
Minister of Agriculture, the
Premier issued the 2020 Agri -
Food Jobs Challenge, and a
2012 University of Guelph
study has estimated that for
every graduate of an agricul-
ture program, three jobs await
them. Most recently, a report
from the Canadian Agricultural
Human Resources Council
(CAHRC) has warned that if
steps aren>t taken, the labour
shortage in the industry will
double by 2025.

letter to the editor
2017 Liberal Budget falls short for Huron -Bruce
Dear Editor,
Once again, Justin Trudeau
has hiked taxes on Canadian
families and small businesses.
Budget 2017 also confirms that
the Prime Minister broke his
campaign promise to keep def-
icit spending under control
and balance the budget by
2019. Instead the Prime Minis-
ter wants to borrow billions
more.
Budget 2017 includes tax
hikes for beer and wine, child
care, small business owners
(incl., farmers, fishers, doctors,
lawyers, accountants, etc.),
donated medicines, oil and gas
companies, and tourism. This
is in addition to ending tax
breaks for children's arts and
sports lessons.
There is nothing in this Lib-
eral budget that puts more
money in the pockets of hard-
working Canadian families.
Instead they got higher taxes
and more debt that will have to
be paid off by future
generations.
Just last week, the Prime
Minister admitted that $195
million of the funding for
"child care" will actually he
going to Ottawa bureaucrats,
instead of families that need it.
The Liberals cant tell us how
many child care spaces they
are actually going to create.
They «hope» its 40,000 but
dons seem to actually have a
plan. Instead of growing the
middle class, they>re growing
government and Canadian
families are going to foot the
bill.
Budget 2017 does nothing to
support hard-working farmers
in Huron -Bruce. In fact, farm-
ers and fishermen may face
higher insurance premiums
resulting from the Liberals>
decision to scrap the income
tax exemption for insurers of
farming and fishing property.
And by failing to provide any
details regarding the next agri-
cultural policy framework, the
Liberals have left farmers in the
dark. What support programs
will they have in the future?
Municipalities need good
infrastructure, but they also
need programs that are easy to
access, provide predictable
funding, and do not leave

small and rural communities
behind. Budget 2017 con-
tained no new infrastructure
spending beyond what was
announced in the 2016 Fall
Economic Statement. Munici-
palities need infrastructure
investments to prosper and
help keep our property taxes
lower.
Justin Trudeau and the Lib-
eral government's priorities
are not the priorities of ordi-
nary hard-working Canadians.
Conservatives will continue to
be the voice of the taxpayer
and we will not stay silent
while the government nickel-
and-dimes Canadians.
Sincerely,
Ben Lobb, MP
