Huron East curious to what responsibilities they have following the hiring of County Emergency Management Coordinator Shaun Gregory Huron Expositor The County of Huron is projected to hire a full-time County Emergency Management Coordinator (CEMC) employee for the entire region, leaving Huron East wondering what duties each municipality's obligations are. When legislation passed in 2002, it was in the hands of each council to create a program catering to a potential CEMC, but instead most municipalities left their present staff to inherit such duties. For Huron East, those responsibilities were given to their fire chief, Marty Bedard, who has held this position since 2003. At a Huron East council meeting March 21, Huron East Mayor Bernie MacLellan asked Bedard if he under- stood what was expected in the future from each lower -tier borough following the filled position. "We're not sure what responsibilities each municipality is going to have," stated Bedard by phone, a day after council. Previously, this position was dubbed to be part-time, the County however felt a longing for a "level of consistency" across Huron County, especially with the emergency planning side of it, according to a document provided by Huron East. Although the County is set to employ a CEMC, Bedard mentioned that each council is obliged to have an alternate coordinator, which he said is pointing towards him. "I will probably be that person because I have all the training." The role of a fire chief has changed a lot in the last decade, said Bedard, meaning there is "more stuff downloaded to us." But he said the CEMC protocol has levelled off. According to Huron East this new position will be minor in terms of impacting the budget.
