In a barn fire, roughly 500
pigs were killed at a farm on
the outskirts of Seaforth last
week.
The Seaforth fire station
was called at approximately
7:25 a.m. March 23 to a barn
fire on Hydro Line Road in
the municipality of lluron
East.
Firefighters arrived on
the scene and extinguished
the blaze in about two
hours, Huron East Fire
Department believe the
cause most likely is from
electrical.
Each pigpen is made out
of a plastic flooring, when
the blaze ignited, Huron
East fire chief Marty Bedard
said the floor heated up -it
then melted -resulting in
several pigs falling into the
manure held underneath
the barn.
Bedard said the pigs had
to stay' in the barn tivhile the
fire was active, "they really
couldn't do anything," he
said.
Some pigs also died of
smoke inhalation, stated
Bedard.
"Smoke really does a lot of
damage to pigs, they were
the smaller pigs," Bedard
said in a phone conversa-
tion, he added that the barn
usually takes care of about
2000 pigs.
"To my knowledge they
are not very tolerant to a lot
of (smoke), they can't han-
dle it, the smoke sets in their
lungs and kills them pretty
quick."
Bedard sends out his con-
dolences to the owners of
the farm and the animals
lost.
"It could have been a lot
worse than it was."
