Ministry of Labour
investigating death
at Goderich salt mine
Ontario's Labour Ministry is
investigating the weekend death of
a man at the world's largest under-
ground salt mine in Goderich.
Mine owner Compass Minerals
says the man was a contractor who
was working at the mine Saturday
morning.
Police and Compass provided
few details, but say emergency
treatment was provided and the
man was taken to hospital where he
could not be revived.
Huron County OPP reported the
labour ministry — it investigates
workplace deaths — was on site
Saturday.
The scene was secured and the
mine cleared of underground staff
by the company, pending the
results of the investigation.
Compass Minerals is the parent
company of Sifto Salt, which Com-
pass bought in 1990.
The Goderich mine, active since
1867, is located 1,800 feet under
Lake Huron.
One worker at the mine site was
killed in 2011 when a late -summer
tornado struck Goderich, badly
damaging the historic centre of the
Huron County town.

The early -morning fire March
18 in Clinton had the Central
I luron, Seaforth and Goderich
fire personnel at the scene as
well as members of 1-luron
County Emergency Medical
Services (EMS).
Police were called to a blaze,
in a building at the intersection
of Highway 8 (Ontario Street)
and Highway 4 (Victoria Street)
in Clinton, at about 5:30 a.m.,
stated a release from Huron OPP.
Ontario Provincial Police shut
down a main intersection in
Clinton, following the early
morning blaze.
Marty Bedard said he didn't
know how many of his crew
members helped with the situa-
tion, but said, "the aerial truck,
rescue and pumper," were on
scene, which would be supplied
with a crew of fire fighters.
When this type of assistance
is necessary from neighbouring
fire departments, Bedard said
it's a request called mutual aid.
The fire affected no other
buildings. No one was injured.
The intersection was closed last
Saturday.
"We were up there last year at
the same location, this is the
same buildings that were on fire
last year," Bedard said.
