CBC's television series Still
Standing name itself is a perfect
description of the triumph of being
honoured two years in a row at the
Canadian Screen Awards, with two
additional awards to add to their
list of achievements. And the
unique history of a small village
neighbouring Seaforth is to thank
for one of those decorations.
The show, produced by Frantic
Films, is the back-to-back (2016
and 2017) winner of Best Factual
Program or Series. Jonny Harris
with his distinctive Newfound-
lander accent and comedic aura
earned the title of Best Host in a
Lifestyle, Talk or Entertainment
News Program and Writing in a
Factual Program or Series: Still
Standing- Vanastra won as well.
The executive producer of Canada's
far-flung series about small sometimes
forgotten settlements, Maureen
Riley said they were given the choice of
what episode to submit.
"I chose Vanastra because the
town had a great story, Jonny was
inspired by this story as were the
other writers," she stated through
emails. "When the team is inspired
the work is good. And getting the
award just goes to show that."
Reminiscing about filming from
January 31 -February 5 in 2016 felt
like a million years ago, said Riley.
Although her memory is some-
what fogged of the Vanastra epi-
sode, she recalled when they first
arrived in the rural landscape of
Huron County.
"At first we were like how are we
going to shoot this but then we saw
the beauty in all the standing build-
ings and we were so excited about
the rich history," said Riley while
also adding that she considers her-
self an army brat. "Jonny loved
the military story and the passion -
ate people that live there. "
She said Huron East economic
development officer, Jan Hawley
added a bit of enthusiasm in the
overall storyline of the place that
once housed a top-secret military
base and implemented Radar tech-
nology that's believed to be a key
factor in ending World War II.
"It shows small communities
across Canada that have had some

challenges and still do, but are still
standing," Hawley said in a recent
interview.
Since the airing last year, Hawley
said there has been some business
activity resulting in a boost in the
economy.
"I think people are looking at
Vanastra through a different lens,"
she said.
"There is a tremendous
community spirit and it's coming
through and shining."
With the recent credit given
to Still Standing for the episode
about Vanastra, Hawley said the
nationally televised episode put the
community on the map and now
the recent award increases the vil-
lage's exposure. "We are actually
reaping the rewards because of the
award."
