Of recent, a whirlwind of
competitive hockey has
blessed Seaforth and the
town's peewee team was
inches away from savouring
a piece of the glory -one goal
separated their desires.
Stamping its eighth
year, the Doug Perkes
Memorial Tournament,
which is believed tq,be the
largest pewee tournament in
.the county greeted 16 teams
with the better share arriving
from parts beyond Huron
County.
This included teams from
several different coordinates
in Southwestern Ontario, as
well as participating Clubs
from Barrie, Toronto, Elgin
County and as far away as
the Bruce Peninsula.
Every September Craig
Metzger said organizers of
the competition send out
hundreds of emails, focusing
on the teams that competed
the year before, "so they get
the first crack at coming
(back)", he said after the
championship garue
between the Seaforth Stars
and the Lambton Shores
Predators.
Metzger said the DPMT
has grown significantly since
the idea was first propelled
by Perkes' wife Dr. Heather
Percival. Her initial goal was
to create a tribute in her hus-
band's name destined for the
hardest working players not
necessarily the most tal-
ented and skilled.
Back then, six teams
duelled for the champion-
ship, now there are three
times that amount -
Metzger commented, saying
the growth in popularity
stems from an abundance of
extras that typical tourna-

"We try to put on ,:a tourna-
ment that the kids will enjoy,
everybody gets a toque
embroidered with not only
their team logo, but also the
Doug Perkes Tournament as
well," stated Metzger.
The Predators and the Stars
battled Feb. 12. in an epic `A'
championship battle.
The Stars came out strong
offensively and were enjoy-

minutes left in the second
period; by the last period of

play the Predators had tied it
up at three goals each.
The Predators kept com-
ing strong and by capitaliz-
ing on their power plays, the
out-of-towners were up 5-4
with a minute left in the
game. The Stars pulled their
goalie to give themselves a
one-man advantage.
They put the pressure on,
however they came up short
and at game's end the score
remained 5-4.
Next year, the DPMT will
commence on Feb. 9-11 at
the Seaforth arena.
"Knowing Doug, he would
have got a kick out of seeing
the kid's faces, the ones that
are having a lot of fun on the
ice or playing mini -sticks,"
concluded Metzger.
"He would be pleased."
