No alcohol being sold at Harry Potter extravaganza
Shaun Gregory
Huron Expositor
If receiving a buzz off of
booze is your foremost
intention for the Barry
Potter event in Goderich,
coordinators are inform-
ing drinkers to look
elsewhere.
This viral prominence
has overwhelmed the
region; Nathan Swartz
who is responsible for the
organizing of the
enchanted event, told
Postmedia that when the
attendance is larger than
the entire Goderich popu-
lation and then alcohol is
available there is a con-
cern of countless
problems.
"In many ways, Harry
Potter is a kid's story and
they want to make sure it
stays a kid's story," Swartz
stated at Goderich council
Feb. 6, referring to his
recent talks with Warner
Bros., which is the organi-
zation that's the produc-
tion home of Harry Potter.
"They don't want any

lit
bad publicity and I under-
stand (this), we don't want
any bad reputation to a
book we love."
From back and forth
conversations with his
insurance agent, Warner
Bros. and the Town of
Goderich, Swartz said the
decision to forgo any alco-
holic beverages seemed
logical.
"Wye really want to work
well With Goderich Coun-
cil because we not only
want this festival to go
well, we (also) want

Goderich (residents) to be
happy how the festival
went," he said. "So we can
continue to do it, year
after year."
Swartz attended the
Goderich Council with a
delegation armed with a
request for free use of the
town's square; this
includes having the street
closed off to vehicle
traffic.
Myles Murdock,
Goderich Coun. said the
recent verdict of cutting
alcohol out of the fun is
certainly persuading
council to listen to
Swarts's requests.
Though he did mention,
businesses connected to
the HIA may serve alcohol
on their premises while
the affair is running,
which takes place from
October 13-15.
"I think it's a fair assess-
ment to say that this is not
a place to party, it's for the
kids," Murdock said in a
recent phone interview.
"I think given the folks
it's directed at, the people
that are really into Harry
Potter and that whole
mentality, the fantasy and
the wizardry, 1 don't see
other than potions, that
having alcohol be part of
it, I don't know why you
would include it," said
Murdock.
Council made a motion
to direct staff to prepare a
drafting agreement for
Swartz's request.
Through emails, the
organizer said he does
not "foresee any difficul-
ties in this regard."
